Thought I would respond to my own request. Just returned from Friday Harbor. It was off season so some places were closed or on reduced hours...as a result we were unable to visit Duck Soup which is a mile or so out of town. Next time. We had a very nice dinner at The Place...excellent service...great hailbut...nice salads. They have happy hour from 5-6PM. Our favorite breakfast was at the Churchill Coffee House. Excellent breakfast sandwiches and good bagels. It is close to the ferry. Two pretty good lunches at Cask and Schooner and Blue Water Bar and Grill.

Anniversary Dinner in Cannon Beach, Oregon

Well, we just dined at Stephanie Inn a couple of weeks ago and it was absolutely amazing! We have dined here several times over the years and it's better than ever! You can now order ala carte, no set Fixe Prix dinner. We were seated at a table by the window, it was misting the night we were there. The food quality is excellent, we had a Prawn Salad, Artichoke Soup and the Fillet Mignon which was phenomenal. It is perfect for a special occasion.

We also dined at Fishes Sushi where JP's used to be. I cannot say enough wondeful things about John Newman's new venue. The space is beautiful and immaculate with an open kitchen. Our food was delicious and the service was very attentive. The have steak on the menu there which we went back to try one night but they were closed.

Have fun in Cannon Beach! :)

I can imagine !

I was talking to the lady at Artwood Gallery, she said the new building is designed to have a good rooftop patio about the same height as the
upstairs patio of Jalapenos.

At least the open space around Fairhaven F&C (double-decker bus) will be around for awhile yet, as far as we know.

Had lunch at the Bellwether recently. Food was OK, service was glacial. We sat on the patio (lovely) then moved into the bar, which was cozy and pleasant with a great view, but definitely did have a TV. I would go here for drinks and make sure to sit either by the fire or right by a window.

downtown Anchorage? updated info? (Vancouver BC chows?)

i didn't realize that Air Canada now has direct flights YVR to Anchorage. Great news.

anyway - it's a possible plan for the longest day of the year --- not sure how much darkness we'll see.

just wondered if any cross-border Cascadia Vanc chows had been up there. and in advance, i know there's no trader joe's in AK. ; )

i think CBS media company will want us to discuss on the Pac NW board - but i asked on the BC site because i value neighbourly input from compatriots.

============

i have read the various inputs about Anchorage - seems like a surf & turf kind of place, which makes sense for a resource / cruise ship economy.

anyone who has input - we'll be staying in the downtown (i hope it's a downtown) area -- near a Sheraton, the Captain Cook - etc. We are flying up - no boats for us. We will not have a car tho i have read about the pizza place out toward Seward.

thank you

Where to eat around Sisters, OR?

Hi,
The best place to eat on a limited budget in Sisters OR, is ALI'S DELI. The locals know it as just ALI'S. Look for the TOWN SQUARE in the center of the old part of town, at 161 E. Cascades, which is the highway through town.
The owner is an extremely friendly Russian woman, who is also a great cook. Her soups are the very best in town, and if you want something out of the ordinary, ask about their Borsht. For $15, you could just about eat there twice! That's because ALI's give huge servings for reasonable prices. I swear, their sandwiches have about a half pound of meat. Try it at least once while you are in Sisters, and you will probably be going back. Oh, she also bakes the best dinner rolls I have ever tasted. They are almost more like some kind of cake. In the summer, the owner stays open until about 8:00, and even though it is actually a deli, some people realize that it is also a great place to have dinner. By the way, it's also the cleanest restaurant in town.

What's the environment of Juneau? Wet, cool, coastal, with forested mountains rising almost immediately up from the sea, topped with glaciers. If you want something local, stop by a grocery, buy a box of Sailor Boy Pilot Bread and some salmon jerky, and start climbing. ;)

also suggests a can of smoked oysters

Medford has some great spots. Inexpensive is Tim's BBQ on Court Street near RV Mall. Turn left (south) off McAndrews. Also, so good and atmosphere is Bambu in Albertson's Shopping Center, off N. Phoenix Road in east Medford. And for lunch and dinner, 38 Central in downtown Medford. It's more expensive, locally grown foods, good beer and wine, and has a comfort food menu. I love the mac and cheese.

It depends what your looking for, Alloro has the best food, Lord Bennets has great food and great view, Tony's crab shack has great seafood/ sandwiches but you order at the counter and sit outside( they do have a enclose patio).
Wenatchee recs?

Was searching around and came across this post. Since this thread probably won't be a hot topic I thought I'd add my 2 cents for posterity's sake.

Personally I've found McGlinn's and South to be overrated. The locals rave about both, but they would be considered middle of the road if they were located in a larger area. Both can have excruciatingly long wait times, as well as hit-or-miss service and food. Then again, sometimes both can be really on-point and you can luck out by hitting the trifecta of a short wait time, good service, and good food. Both have also grasped the importance of ambiance and decor, which seems to elude most other places in the area. Both also had live music at one point, but I'm not sure if that's a regular occurrence. McGlinn's is also known for their draft microbrews. I don't know if it's officially the largest selection in town, but they have some interesting offerings and rotate most of the taps seasonally.

Word on the street was that the 60+ year old Windmill was on the brink of failure, but the (new?) owners redid the menu in the last year or so. I haven't been in years, but the place seems to be hanging in there. With steaks in the $30+ range, it's the local destination for splurging or celebrating.

Iwa Sushi is decent. I've heard of occasional bad service (could happen anywhere, though). A new branch of the Fujiyama sushi chain opened about six months ago and is probably giving Iwa a run for their money. If you prefer local, then choose Iwa.

Fame- haven't been. Not much local buzz other than it's a good restaurant for a date. Same as Shakti's, which I have been to. It used to be one of the more interesting dining options but seems to have been coasting for the last few years. Perhaps trying to ride out the recession or just focusing on pleasing the core clientele. Another feature of Shakti's is a large outdoor patio.

Smokeblossom (not Smokehouse) was a pretty good place, but alas it closed over a year ago. The chef/owner did move the operation to Cashmere but as of now it's only a catering kitchen and not open to the public. Rumors keep popping up about the restaurant reopening, but that seems less and less likely as time goes on.

Casa Tapatia is ok, kinda generic Mexican (i.e. old-fashioned Tex-Mex). It's fine if you like that sort of thing, but if you expect top-of-the-line then definitely skip this one. Just about all of the "authentic" Mexican restaurants in Wenatchee are this style, so be forewarned. If you want to have Mexican in Wenatchee, try one of the many taco trucks located along both Wenatchee Avenue and Mission Street (both are parallel to each other). A new torta shop just opened up right near the bridge on the west side of the river. The sandwiches are gigantic and the flavors are great...I was there a couple of months ago when the weather was still cold and got one with pulled pork, melted cheese and a fried egg. It really hit the spot. The location seems to be cursed (nothing lasts longer than six months) so it may not be around very long. For a different take on Latin food there is an El Salvadorean place around the corner from the movie theater that makes pupusas from scratch. The place is kind of dive-y, but the food is terrific.

As for other options:

Visconti's- Standard Italian. There are two locations, one in Wenatchee and the other in Leavenworth. Both were "meh" for a long time, but I heard that the Leavenworth location recently hired a new chef who updated the menu of both locations. The Leavenworth spot also has a great salumi shop and an adjacent gelato place downstairs in the same building. Both get rave reviews for their wine lists as well.

Chateau Faire le Pont- A winery located in the north end of Wenatchee. Supposedly is high-end with prices and ambiance to match, but I've been told on several occasions that the food is disappointing. The menu used to be standard French but the current chef revamped it into Cajun cuisine.

Garlini's- This place began in East Wenatchee back in the early 80's and recently moved to Wenatchee about a year or two ago. The E Wen. location was totally old school New York style Italian (in a bad way) but the new version has updated decor and a new menu. I've heard a variety of comments on the food, but they seem to be trying to up their game. The wood-fired pizza and salads both get good reviews.

Tastebuds- A coffee and wine bar located in the same complex as Garlini's. They also have a small, but well chosen bottled beer selection. Food options are severely limited, something to nibble on like a cheese plate or charcuterie. They also do pizza, but I don't think that's a popular option. There is live music (usually mellow stuff like a jazz singer or classical guitarist) and have an adjacent patio shaded by a pergola awning. This is typically the hangout for a more mature crowd.

Caffe Mela- An upscale coffee shop on Wenatchee Avenue. They roast their own coffee beans and sell to several places around town. Within the last year they acquired a beer and wine license and are now open evenings. They feature basic coffeehouse pastries by day and run a small plates menu by night. A favorite of the local hipsters and wi-fi moochers.

VN Pho- located in a strip mall on the street behind Target. A small, unassuming shop that specializes in Pho (surprise!). Online reviews heap massive amounts of praise on this place, apparently their Pho is to die for. I have tried it, I thought it was good, but I'm not big on Asian cuisines and probably not the best judge. But when Yelp members from Seattle are saying that VN Pho can stand toe-to-toe with, or even surpass, anything over there I think that is a good benchmark.

Country Boys BBQ- Located in Cashmere. The northwest gets a bad rap for barbecue, but this place does some tasty food and does it the right way (their smoker is out back). Another favorite of the online community. They don't specialize in one regional style, so they've got a variety of options. If you're in town and have a barbecue craving, definitely stop by.

Eatery Park- Formerly known as Pretiola Bakery, it's located on the "Loop" trail in a park that runs along the Columbia River. This is a coffee shop/sandwich place/bakery that does EVERYTHING from scratch. They specialize in locally produced and organic products and have several vegan and gluten-free items. If you're into that sort of thing, this is your best bet.

Lemolo's Deli- A solid downtown spot. This is a lunch-only place with an eclectic hippie vibe. They feature the basics: soups, salads, sandwiches, and artisanal style pizzas, all made fresh.

The Wild Huckleberry- If you're wanting to go out for breakfast and can't fathom going to Denny's or Shari's, then this is your spot. They do a decent Eggs Benedict (in a variety of styles) and have pretty good omelets and other standard plates. Not mind blowing, but a safe bet for a local breakfast option. They also feature lunch and dinner, but I've heard zero feedback about those services. I think it's mostly the retired crowd that goes there after 12pm.

Lastly, I should mention Dizzy D's. Located in a strip mall near the community college. It's a typical local diner that does a great burger. Some say best burger in town, a title which it has won several years in a row (which contest I have no idea, but the sign out front said so). Thankfully it's not decked out in a 50's theme, the walls have pictures of aging military vets and school sports teams circa 1991 (no idea why, probably have significant meaning to the owners) and other random local memorabilia. The rest is standard diner fare, which I admit I haven't tried (just their burgers). Their hours are a bit odd- they close at 7pm on weekdays and don't open at all on Sundays, if I recall correctly. If you're on a burger mission for lunch, this is where you need to go.

Hi LC, don't take my word for it. I have a bit of allergy to MSG (headache, dry mouth, etc) and for some reason Japanese food laced with MSG hit me harder than other MSG-laden cuisines, like Chinese. So I may very well be over-generalizing local AYCE sushi places in terms of their MSG-ness.

BTW, Kimura (on Rupert St in Vancouver) is slated to close at end of April:

I've not been to Kimura which is quite well-spoken of by local bloggers.

Fountain Cafe, Pt. Townsend

Tried the Fountain Cafe on our short trip to Port Townsend this weekend.

I am going to have to argue with some of what has been said above. It's not just standard fare done well and in a good environment. I ordered their special pasta, an adobo/coconut milk with flank steak and peppers over linguine. Oh my goodness, I swear I woke up thinking about it and have already tried to google a recipe that will get me close. It was divine. My husband ordered steak which was well prepared, but fairly standard.

We started with the pan fried oysters, which were so delicately battered and served with a slightly sweet, slightly horseradished cocktail sauce. One of the best meals anywhere, I have enjoyed in a long time.

I wonder if they'd be willing share that recipe? I may have to ask as we don't get to Pt. Townsend often.

Bellingham: Dashi update

So, I originally posted about Dashi some time ago. Since then, I have been really loving their steamed buns. They aren't like traditional steam buns with only a tablespoon of filling inside the bun. More like a steamed bun taco with LOADS of delicious filling. At $6 I think they are a great deal, better deal for me than a noodle bowl which often doesn't quite fill me up.

Also, Dashi is moving to a permanent location soon and they will be expanding their menu at that time. I'm just hoping the prices don't go up too much after the move. I'm really digging a $6 steamed bun for lunch. Below is the link to the Herald story.

I Love White House (in Post Falls) and it's sisters West Wing (South Hill) and the Oval Office for drinks and apps (Post Falls) for a more casual mediterranean, I don't find the garlic overpowering at all, depends on what you order.
Max's at Mirabaux has surprisingly good food.

Good cheap eats in Eugene OR?

Cheap eats! I like Yi shen market for things like crispy pork and bbq pork. Lonches is a Mexican food cart. Everything is under $10, I love the carne asada burritos, $5.50. The Mexican market plaza latina has some good food for cheap, my fave is the chile rellenos. Things like avacados and limes are usually cheaper here. I like ordering beef fried rice at fortune inn, a Chinese restaurant. They have lunch specials for under $7! Good cheap produce, I have found is at Winco. I love market of choice, but they are definitely not cheap. Once Saturday market is up and running, I would suggest definitely getting fresh produce from there.
Kamitori sushi on Williamette street, has pretty good sushi. Lunch and happy hour specials under $10. Toshi's ramen is under $10. On a cold rainy day, I like the shoyu ramen. The gyoza is the best thing at Toshi's! Izakaya meiji, is a Japanese tapas bar, that I like. Hop Valley in Springfield has great happy hour meal prices for things like sliders and fries, $5 with a purchase of a drink.
Sixth street grill, a place I dine often. Has burger and brew nights for $7.50 on Tuesdays. Pegasus pizza, the best in town. Has $5 small 2 topping pizzas during lunch hour. The one on campus. The best Thai is Ta Ra Rin. The lunch specials are around $8. The pumpkin curry is awesome, but around $14. Little big burger are small juicy burgers. Off the waffle, is great for liege Belgium waffles.
Morning glory is a vegetarian/vegan breakfast cafe. Everything is under $10. Brails, studioonecafe for breakfast. New Day bakery has great freshly baked sour dough bread for $4, and delicious desserts like cherry cheese cake. Mini pecan pies.

Newmans fish and chips, is my favorite for halibut fish 'n chips.
Delacata food cart has some good southern food, for under $10.
Izumi sushi is one of my favorite places to go. They have a lunch combo for $10.50. Happy hour rolls are $3

With all my suggestions. I am from Vancouver, B.C. Where they have amazing ethnic food. But I have to realize, that I am in Eugene. It's not going to compare. You can't compare the food here, to say San Fran or LA.

Seeds Restaurant in La Conner

I have been here several times and really love this place. I typically sit in the bar. Nice environs, friendly wait staff - very knowledgeable about their offerings. Everyone is smiling and relaxed.

Short wine list, but a few good selections of bottles under 35 bucks. I ordered a Pinot from Oregon and it went fabulous with all the apps. Mix drinks are a bit pricey, but not the usual overly sweetened mix drinks on the menu either.

Tonight I went for happy hour and had the cougar cheese jalapeno poppers. Wow. They were so good, I put in a second order (not kidding). Fresh BIG jalapenos, stuffed with coug cheese and deep fried in a tempura type batter (light and not greasy) served with a creamy chive sauce. Delish! FYI, several cougar cheese items on the bar menu -including coug mac and cheese. I have not seen that anywhere this side of Eastern Washington......very nice indeed.

I ordered the crab cakes. I had them on a previous visit and really liked them. They changed it this time and they were not as good. No big hunks of Dungeness as before. More "herby" (Thai inspired?) but still very tasty. I would choose something different next time unless they start putting the hunky crab back in.

I also ordered the goat cheese and beet salad. I thought "how boring" when I ordered it but I "thought" I remembered that it was unusually good last time I had it for lunch. I was right. This is an exceptionally tasty salad. It was filled with large sliced beets, crumbled goat cheese and candied pecans...but the dressing is what makes it. This dressing is red, looks maybe like a pomegranate red wine vinegar (maybe?) with oil and some ....cream. Yes, it was creamy and that is what is different. Just perfect.

For dessert, we shared a huge slice of coconut cream pie. Lord, it was just the right amount of sweetness, with a homemade custard layer with a hint of lemon and cloud-like whipped cream that only had a hint of sweetness. Very nice with decaf coffee. The crust was not soggy, I appreciate that.
So, grand total: 1 bottle of NW Pinot, 2 orders of poppers, one order of crab cakes, one salad, 2 decaf coffees and one coconut cream pie for 80 bucks. I feel good about it.

I will keep going back. Lots of organic food, carefully prepared, creative use of the Northwest bounty, easy, clean , friendly atmosphere.
