PDX - Cheap eats downtown

Superdog! The one on the S. Park Blocks is open on the weekend. My fave is the Zweigle white hot (from the Rochester NY area): http://www.superdogpdx.com/contact.htm

If you have a sandwich at Kenny & Zuke's, you'll get two meals out of it...maybe not cheap, but a good value.

I think Hot Pot City is open on Sunday, though that is at the south edge of downtown. Great time of year for it, though!

I think the Flying Elephants in Fox Tower is open on Sundays (an offshoot of Elephant's deli) - lots of choices under $5 there.

I'm guessing the Rialto is open (do they actually close? ;o)

Cassidy's is an easy walk back to your hotel then. Clyde Common and Kenny & Zuke's are located right at the Ace and great choices for food and drink.

I'm not a fan of the Henry's vibe, but there's lots of taps to try there...and it is also walkable from the hotel.

Morrison Hotel is very close to Holocene, but only open until midnight. Green Dragon is also close, not sure what time they close on Sunday. Both should be open before the show though... ;o)

I reported on the terrible meal we had during this promo at the Barking frog on another thread. It was truly an awful meal. We didn't even take the 20% off gift cards they were passing out for a visit in January.

'The bread pudding with the monkfish was too salty to eat and the monkfish was over cooked. The caramel sauce on one of the desserts was grainy and the garnishes with the rillettes didn't complement the dish. The couple we were with didn't want to say anything and our server never asked if there was a problem when we left quite a bit'.

Smoked whitefish - Seattle

I know I Love NY Deli's new spot on Roosevelt had some white fish in their deli case.
Don't recall if it was whole.

Incidentally, I'm really liking them in that new spot.
It's the same guy as from the little stall at the Market that people like.
I was a little down on them because at the market, I thought my pastrami was sliced so thin that it was a hiding a lack of moistness and good texture (ie, anything sliced that thin is going to be pretty good...), but I got a reuben from them last week and it was really, really good.

Their potato salad is still weird (oddly sweet and undercooked potatoes), but their cole slaw is good.

Fresh, Live Lobsters in Seattle or Eastside?

We did that last year--I'll take a lobster dinner over a turkey dinner any day. Have you checked the Eastside Uwajimaya? Here in Seattle, you can reliably find tanks of them at Asian groceries (not just Uwajimaya but HT, Ranch 99...) or fish stores (Mutual Fish, University Seafood). Oh and Central Market in Shoreline. I've found that it's worth calling around for prices and sizes is worth it--there seems to be a fair amount of variation with price, and sometimes stores are out or out of the smaller sizes.

Spur (located downtown in Belltown) and How to Cook a Wolf (located a cab ride away at the top of Queen Anne hill) are both great choices. Alternately, you could come up to Capitol Hill (a long walk or a short cab ride away) and hit either/both of their sister restaurants Tavern Law or Anchovies & Olives. I've personally found more seafood choices at Anchovies & Olives than at How to Cook a Wolf, and I enjoyed the food more at Tavern Law than Spur. Union (downtown) is another of Ethan Stowell's restaurants and also a great place for solo dining. As for breakfast, Tom Douglas' Lola is probably my fav brunch downtown, followed closely by Boat Street Cafe (Belltown). Presse up on Capitol Hill is another great breakfast option. Enjoy your visit!

An interesting note about Mashiko is that it is Seattle’s first “sustainable” sushi restaurant. At such, it has stopped serving such sushi staples as farm-raised Atlantic salmon, black tiger shrimp from Southeast Asia, farm-raised unagi (freshwater eel), farm-raised hamachi, ankimo (monkfish liver), and toro (bluefin tuna belly). If you are serious about walking-the-walk on sustainability, Mashiko is where you should go for sushi.

13 Coins

I've been a semi-regular at 13 Coins for many years. Does it need a makeover - yes. If it is 10PM, and you need a good meal, 13 Coins or Denny's is it in the Sea-Tac area. 13 Coins used to be packed on Saturday nights, but now it is pretty slow. One reason is the recession. The other is the new ownership has made a lot of cost cutting measures like changing out the classic 13 Coins plates for generic ones, changing the recipes that have been around for decades, eliminating items in the relish plates that were signature - like the califlower and the butter balls. Most of the waiters that used to know me are gone, though some still remain.

After all that, where else are you going to get a Joe's Special or an Italian Sausage Fritatta when you really need one? The Chicken Parm and the French Onion soup are still the reasons I go back. In the morning, the Farmer's Omelette is still as good as ever.

13 Coins is still a place where you can go and get a good late-night meal, watch the cooks almost burn the place down every night, and get classic sauteed dishes that you can't get in any of the new fangled places. It is like an old shoe - comfortable, and familiar.

A little while ago, we tried this tiny Latin Amarican Tapas place on Capitol Hill based on a mention in Seattle Magazine:

http://www.mezaseattle.com/meza.html

We really enoyed the food - especially the spicy seared scallops and braised pork, the sangria was quite good, and the atmosphere was warm and cozy.

It is not at all fancy, but the price was quite good. Five of us ate very well and drank sangria for a little more than $100.

Maltby Cafe is just off 522 as you drive from Woodinville to Monroe. So it would a good breakfast stop if you are heading out of the Seattle area (esp I405) in the morning.

The upstairs area at Tavolata is a great recommendation. I went to a party there this summer and it was fabulous.

Finding Comice pears in Seattle area?

Comice pears are widely available in the better Seattle grocery stores (and presumably some farmers markets), including Whole Foods, Metropolitan, at least some QFC's, etc. They will not be as beautiful as what you get through mail order because they bruise very easily.

Seeking great (or at least good) red-sauce Italian in Seattle

Thank you very much for your comments. For me the pizza is more than just the crust, and I have generally despaired of finding commercial pizza in Seattle that is the exact equivalent of Neapolitan pizza, much like I haven't had quite the same bagels here as I've tried in New York. As for the sauce, in retrospect I should have used "rich" rather than "thick sweet". Lots of tomato taste not added sugar, but naturally sweet, whether the tomatoes are fresh or canned.

Finally made it to Suzy's and I concur. Great food, friendly place, big portions. I think it might become my favorite ethnic restaurant in Kitsap area. I posted on my blog about our first two visits.

River's Edge - Grant's Pass, OR

rjohn, I've not heard about River's Edge, but the info I have in general on Grant's Pass suggests the following:

from bbqboy -
The new Taprock Grill is open 8am-10pm every day. A friend had breakfast there last Sunday and liked it a lot.
http://www.taprock.com/index_or.html

I hear recs for summerjo's, Kalypso and Johnny's (great greasy NY sandwiches, etc.). They have websites, too.

Please let us know if you try River's Edge and what you think. Thanks.

I don't remember the the cocktail from Zig Zag. it was Basil Hayden's bourbon, simple syrup, a dash of bitters and some liqueur that was dry and tasted a bit like campari. He told me the name but i forgot.

the food was outstanding melt in your mouth goodness. I also bought some "hamburger" made from quality cuts.
