Costco Food Finds - 2nd Quarter 2013

I've been all over the Kirkland pickled herring in wine sauce (glass jars in the refrigerated/seafood section, Tigard, OR store). It's about $4.99 a big jar, and very tasty, imo. Oddly, the last time I bought it the chatty cashier mentioned at check out, "I love this stuff, too! You know it's not real, right?" He then went on chattily and since I was in a hurry to leave, I didn't follow up to ask him what he meant by "not real." However, when I got home I checked the jars and "herring" is the first ingredient (followed by the usual suspects, vinegar, peppercorns, etc). Still bewildered by the cashier's comment, but I find it to be a good quality inexpensive pickled herring -- and I do go through phases of enjoying pickled herring and some crusty bread for lunch. :)

Actually found our Olive Garden lunch to be good inexpensive veggie option

Avoided trying this place for years but we gave it a chance lunch was actually cheap and good, at least for veggies.. cant vouch for meat dishes. We got a calzone.. Create a calzone which is in the computer but not on the menu. Got shrooms, onion, spinach and this way it is fresh made, not pre=prepared and good fresh crust. Also we had eggplant parm which was nice and crispy outside with nice creaminess inside. Came with the unlimited soup or salad, so we had both to share. The minestrone tastes fresh with kidney and white beans, cabbage, spinach, pasta, tomatoes etc. We added some croutons, bread stick and butter to richen it up. Cost 18 minus our 3 coupon you get if you join online for a pigout of enuf vegetables for a week. Waitstaff was very good, jazz standards were pleasant background, comfy window booths.. We would do it again.. certainly not as bad as we have heard, at least for this meal.. I just don't like the marinara, way too spicy for me..This OG was a fairly new one in Danvers MA,maybe that makes a difference.

I agree with you about Meat in general. Once I bought some beef steak (I think it was NY steak) because I was too far from nearest Costco and running out of time to shop. I know it's not fare to compare the size, the TJ's steak is s thin and cooks too fast. Not a lot of flavor either. I bought their chicken breasts with rib - Empire brand I think. It was dry and so expensive for what it is.

I would guess that the Beef Council would want to be able to sell all parts of the cow, and not have a lot of waste leftover. So if they can "glue" some less desirable parts into a product and sell it - more profit.

Don't forget that not every family is a standardized 4 person unit. Perhaps Dad takes two kids to get this deal, and he gets the extra sandwich. Perhaps a family with 3 kids buys the deal, plus some additional food.

McDonald's Daily Double

This doesn't seem to have it's own thread, although it has been mentioned in passing in a couple of others.

With 2 patties it comes in at 1/5 pound of meat, plus has lettuce, tomato, 'real' onion slices, and cheese. It is dressed with mayo. At $1.99 it is less than half the price of a Quarter Pounder with almost as much meat and (to me) better toppings. If you just have to have pickle they will put some on for you. Basically it is a McDouble deluxe at twice the price. Most of the time for me it's worth it, although I find the flavor is enhanced by the addition of ketchup, in which case it becomes a 'virtual whopper' (from that other place.) I usually get mine without cheese. Somehow asking for it with no cheese plus ketchup confuses them. I've taken to ordering it without cheese and asking for an extra ketchup packet when they give me the burger.

Path of least resistance.

I didn't get MOS Burger. Tried them in Kyoto - the service was great - maybe too great - but the burger didn't impress me. Maybe it's from my perspective as an Angeleno?

Now I did really like Mister Donut. The quality for a chain or otherwise was excellent. Their cake-style donuts have this mochi-like chew that I've never experienced in anything cake-looking before. Their flavors were also unique and did taste good. Yomogi totally worked.

Your welcome. My pet peeve is that many meals do not require professional skill or extremely high end appliances to prep & steak is one of then. If one enjoys cooking at home, spending the extra 25% for top quality ingredients produces a night and day difference in the final product. I love going out to eat and do it often, but I also love showing guests that basic cooking skills combined with top quality ingredients produce 5 star dining at 1/5 the cost. They can also spend the night if they spend time at my bar :-)

Red Lobster Targets Customers Who Go to Red Lobster But Can't Stand Lobster

I will order two things that are still on the menu. One is Wood grilled lobster, shrimp and scallops with rice pilaf and broccoli although the portion size just keeps getting smaller. The other is the lobster which is usually very well executed. Typically the 1 1/4 lb is not 28 where I live but 21-24. I would recommend it. I don't like getting full lobster out because it is messy and not conducive to fine dining. I think the fact that it is a RL makes it better because it is less formal. If we had decent seafood or even a chain like Legal serving shellfish I would not go. I am in central PA and while we have a couple fish places, none are doing lobster or at least not so reasonably priced.

don, i could tell it was obviously popular because of all the other people who were in there and I think this was on a Sunday afternoon! didn't look as if it were hurting for customers....but it should be! LOL

glad a Dayton Ohio local chain is successful, don't wish any business enterprise to fail in this economy, but still one would hope said business would at least be solidly mediocre...Hot Heads is neither! :(

I can't imagine taking their food to go, either. If it's inedible in the restaurant itself, it would be trash by the time you got it home. Blech! In all that's decent in the world, how does this place stay open?

Need Olive Oil recommendation

I agree with you there.. explaining harvest date is usually where I lose people. Maybe because I'm 24 and there isn't anyone my age as geeked about it as I am, but it still does happen when I talk to people twice my age.

The problem I have with the word "imported" is that it is too often used as a marketing term for quality, when in reality the oil is actually imported... from a pomace dealer in ____, for example. That said, "supermarkets" is also so broad that it could include big box stores that might not care at all about quality.

Many of the products on my website have won prestigious competitions (one oil just won "Best Olive Oil in the World" by the IOC), but these oils are rarely seen on store shelves in the States because of their import cost, price tag and very little demand. We like selling online because we can list all of the details regarding quality (Harvest, origin, etc.), but also to build the producers' fanbase and make them more global.

Sure but you also have SS opening in the Middle East, the UK, and Turkey where burgers aren't going to look anything like theirs. Or where they think Five Guys is the be all end all of burgers. As for the fries, I've pretty much given up on handcut fries. Nine out of ten places have no idea what they're doing and are just doing it because they can charge more. Every SS trip I've made has been a consistent expierience, which trumps hit-or-miss "fresh" fries for me.

It would be nice if they had more tea choices like at Sam's. I don't go for their hotdogs (I prefer grilled as the mushy steamed dogs are not my gig) and their pizza is so greasy lately that we continue to just get a drink.

I LOVE them! I also love Pizza Hut. And I know that grosses most people out. It's my I'm hungover/I'm depressed/I'm turning my phone off and watching The Housewives of Orange County all night kind of meal. 1 medium cheese pan pizza, extra sauce, with ranch to dip, and a 10 (oh, why am I lying?) 20 piece boneless mild wings. They're like chicken nuggets covered in an extremely mild, shiny dark ruby glaze of buffalo goodness. Kind of. Not sure if it should be put in the same category as buffalo wings. It's kind of like...craving a flimsy little McDonalds burger when there's an In N Out just down the street. Sometimes there's just a certain taste that you crave, and it ain't always gourmet...
