No, these are not frozen, and never have been. I assure you that I can tell the difference. They're shipped by air, with plenty of cold packs. You'd be amazed at the advances made in shipping food in the past few years. I can get fresh oysters, crab, and fish from the Pacific Northwest and have them arrive here in the mid-west in pristine condition the next day.

fearing for their jobs.

when i first started using the self check-out at a home depot several years ago, hardly anyone used them. i have now gone into home depots where the only open registers are the 2-4-6-8 self with only one worker monitoring them. after a while people do learn to use them and the stores generally put their best personnel in the monitoring positions. so the fear is legitimate.

I tried it on two days ago (Friday) and today (Sunday). On Friday, I wasn't impressed, the beef was too charred, not enough sauce, too much lettuce. Today, Sunday, it was simply amazing. The beef was just right and meshed excellent with the cheese, there was more sauce on it actually giving the whole burger flavor and then some and the portion of lettuce was just right. The combo is 4.49 with fries and a Coke is an excellent deal AND YOU GET A GIFT CARD that can be for $1-$100. I got $1 both times but using the card next time, makes the combo $3.49 or you can get something else and use it towards that.

Nice wine find at Costco

Today I went in search of a Riesling at my local Costco (Chantilly VA). I saw couple of nice wines but they were more expensive than I wanted to spend.

Then I saw one more: an F.W. Langguth Erben Auslese (Rhinehessen) 2007 for $7.99. Seems like a misprint, no? the information on the label points to a wine of some quality. So I did some research and it's indeed a very respectable wine. Given the popularity of sweet wines these days, the bottles will probably gather dust. But I'll be picking up a few more. Drink some now, save some for later.

Considering what $7.99 often buys you in the wine aisle, I commend Costco for offering a classy wine at such a price.

Well, he''s an "aficionado", and I'm not going to question the assertion... here I was dumb enough to think that there was not only some grilled meat to be found in Texas, but that, there might even be some tough cuts of meat found there occasionally. Silly me.

To the OP, it's very similar to Outback in terms of prices and menu choices, which may or may not be your thing, but I figure anytime your number of local dining options goes up, that's a good thing.

Safeway - Rancher's Reserve - my opinion (reactions?)

That's correct. Sorry I said good rather than select; I'm an old guy. IIRC, "select" is the new name for the grade that used to be called "good" in the g--- ol' days. I think it those days (I'm talking about a few decades ago) the USDA grades, starting at the top, were prime, choice, good, canner, and cutter. Grading standards have changed over time. Now there are eight grades: prime, choice, select, standard, commercial, utility, cutter, and canner. Most non-ground beef sold in grocery stores is in the choice through standard range. Most of the "branded" beef, such as "Certified Angus," "Ranchers Reserve," and dozens of others, is choice grade.

Pre-cooked food at Applebees?

Condi is 100% correct. I also was a BOH cook at the Bees. Yes, everything came in frozen and went straight to our walk-in. Either to the Freezer Part or some stuff was sat out in the non-freezer part to thaw in plastic Cambro containers or Large Metal Bakery Trays. We also thawed some meats in one of our 3 compartment sinks under cold running water. Then another item, like the nacho hamburger meat for the nachos which also came in frozen, we thawed first, then before placing in a metal Cambro pan on the line, we boiled that in a huge vat of water so it would it get hot.

At our Bees though, we however made the Mash Potatoes from scratch. Like a REAL HUMAN Prep Cook in-store peeled, cut, & mashed potatoes that came in bags. Ours were good. I could have eaten those frequently.

I ate at a chili's last night, because I had a $25 gift certificate that had been sitting around getting dusty in my purse for almost a year. A friend and I did their $20 combo, split one appetizer, pick an entree of the list, and split a dessert. We both ended up immediately splitting and boxing up our entrees and couldn't make much a dent into the dessert. Not haute cuisine, but I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of my burger, and the service was very good. I think the total bill with drinks came to about $26.50, and we both walked away with enough food for lunch the next day. A reasonable value.

I've had far fewer self-checkout problems with SFW than Giant. There always seems to be something that causes an error. That, or a long line because someone is rolling dollar bills into the machine instead of using a debit card.

I just wish Safeway would have more self-checkout aisles. The one closest to me has none and the second closest has 12 aisles, no self checkout, and no more than 3 aisles are ever open. WTF is the point of having all those aisles in the first place if they're never open?

Harris Teeter seems to have the best mix of self checkout and real cashiers. Their cheese section is superior to SFW, Safeway, and Giant.

Turkey from Honeybaked Ham?

Definitely do NOT get the boneless breast but definitely DO get the whole cajun turkey--excellent-- has a mild cajun flavor-pricey but worth it. They are about 12 lbs and cost about $39. Last year I cooked my regular turkey, which is -if I say so myself-GREAT and also the honey baked one and everyone liked the cajun one a bit better.--the only one I ever liked better was deep fried but it is so much trouble.

Costco in the UK

I got to Costco a lot, but I don't find things to be that much cheaper than they are in the supermaket. I do buy meat, coffee, eggs, and peanutbutter there, but not much else. I find that the food isn't always up to the same quality it is in the US.

Costco over here will let you use your US card, which you can renew online. I've always used my US card and never had a problem.

The food court is largely the same and serves baked potatoes and individual pastry items, which they don't market in the US. After a number of years of filling in suggestion forms, they brought over chocolate frozen yoghurt, but they call it ice cream!

They have recently launched the executive membership over here, so they might be taking the Costco US exec club Amex now.

OK- i tried it. I thought it was great! I had the buffalo chicken and a deep dish pepperoni. They were excellent. They told me they make the dough fresh every day and they have over 20 different flavors of pizza. This place was clean, the food was fresh, and the manager made a point to ensure I had a good visit. I will definitely go back!

five guys burger sucks

There's a regional chain here that prepares their fries like Five Guys, and for whatever reason the regional place's fries taste MUCH better. I kept dumping more salt on the Five Guys fries, hoping to jack up the flavor, but no luck.

Oh well that explains it then. I got confused by the extra big straw and also from reading about cupcake shakes made by ice cream places. I think I need to do more research on this while the weather is still fairly mild.

Saxby's no good?

Now some McDonalds are remodeling to have more trendy coffee and comfy chairs. And I believe McDonalds pioneered the hard plastic chairs that are easier to wipe down. The Saxbys near where I live has a big screen tv too. I wonder if those are really more for the employees during slow times. One diner I went to had a flat screen tv in the ladies room. It seems like some of these places have a split personality. Of course if you really want free wifi you can always sit outside in your car and enjoy it for as long as your laptop battery lasts. My local starbucks still charges for wifi I think.

They're available in some DC locations, but it's sometimes an off-menu item that you have to explicitly ask for. The staff doesn't like to prepare them because they have to be made fresh. I've never seen them sitting under a heat lamp.

Costco - Prime Beef Vs Choice test

Bought a couple of the Prime Ribeyes again. One looked more like a New York Strip. Cooked one the same night. Very good, just again not the big beefy flavor I'd hoped for. Cooked the other (strip looking one) tonight. I bought them last Friday, so it had almost a week in the fridge. It was better. Way better. About an 18 oz steak, and I killed it and wanted more.
Probably didn't hurt that I worked 11 hours today, and had a Surly Furious to drink with it, but if I could get that flavor every time, I'd be quite happy.
