Why doesn't San Diego have it's own board???

And about half of it is San Diego. This is exactly the point, the board has split personality syndrome.

I know plenty of places up and down the state. That doesn't change the fact that the board is impractical for a lot of people including myself. If you're here to tout maps, it's not really the issue.

FYI.

I notice that certain pages end up with a perpetual spinning whirligig on my browser (Chrome) tab. My profile is currently an example. I've seen it waiting (or at least report as waiting) for:

pn1.bc.yahoo.com
track.cbs.com

No such (apparent) problem with IE8

There are Chowhounds who are didactic and a lot more who are pedantic. The former can be done by *some* people in a kind, if not exactly charming, way; the latter never. Those who are kind and generous and patient when they give advice/teach are revered here. Those who don't are scorned and/or ridiculed.

And I agree with you that if any CH reads another being "out of whack," that's what that report button is for. I think I'll use that as my substitute for "acting out" :) I'll continue to remind myself that CH is not MY property and I need to behave myself. And behaving myself implies following THEIR rules. It's that old "my way or the highway" adage.

How long before an added restaurant should be available to review?

It has been one month since this has been reported. At the very least could there be some sort of reply why this has not been fixed yet?

While there has been a lot going on addressing the latest round of bugs, it becomes increasingly more difficult to understand why this can not be pushed out.

The way the site works currently, search is difficult to use, linking means nothing anymore in terms of finding records.

The only option left is marking some posts as reviews and in the Bay Area a significant and active part of it ... Wine Country ... cannot be acknowledged in any way.

I;m also curious why this isn't in Technical Help. This is a bug. ChowHQ acknowledged it as a bug. It is not opinion about a feature of the site, it is an out and out problem.

"Places Mentioned" quirk - how to report or fix?

>AFAIK, this latest release didn't go through a users beta test.

A bunch of beta testers weren't sent the e-mail announcing the beta test until it had been up for a while (I was one of them). The result was that my time on the test site was roughly half what it might have been.

Still, you and I and others did manage to point out a lot of bad stuff on the beta. But much of that stuff wound up going live anyway. I'm sure I'm not the only user thinking, What was the point, and what was the big rush?

Now other users are running into some of the same crap. Robert L. said the other day that this is the beta. Can't say he's wrong.

Boards Of Canada

Here is how Canada might be partitioned for purposes of this board:

Newfoundland/Labrador; Maritimes (PEI, NB, NS); Quebec; Ontario; Prairies; BC/Alberta, and The Territories (NWT, Yukon and Nunavit.)

http://canada.gc.ca/othergov-autregouv/prov-eng.html

Oh, wait a minute.

A good bit of Alberta is Prairie; a deal of Quebec could be considered Maritime (and vice-versa) and that former province is claiming parts of Labrador. For sure there is a serious divide between Toronto and the rest of Ontario - I don't know if the same could be said of Montreal and the rest of Quebec or not.

You may also wish to split Buffalo and Toronto into a separate unit and, while you're doing that, do the same for Windsor/Detroit - both in spite of new travel restrictions - and look into a few other frontier districts as well.

This winter will be long and I'm sure that all this will be sorted by spring.

Cheers

Erroneous posts about restaurant closings

I think it's helpful to know if a restaurant has closed. However, lately, I've seen a great deal of erroneous posts saying that restaurants have closed when they are in fact open for business. Before I post that a restaurant has closed, unless I've passed by and have seen a notice advising that the particular restaurant has closed, before posting on this board or elsewhere, I'll check some reliable sources. I really wish more people would do the same. I see it as a big problems on long threads (and frequently threads that were started years ago); sometimes a post including erroneous information might not be addressed and corrected because it gets lost in the sea of other posts. Am wondering if others have noticed this as well.

Post expansion quirk

In general the unexpanded already-read system works, but there are anomalies, and I cannot define the exact situation when they happen.

As of this moment, when I open the thread http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/661072
I see all the posts expanded, including ones I wrote. I scroll through to the end so I have 'seen' them all. I am not sure that makes any difference, but I did it anyway. If I navigate away and then navigate to the same thread it is still expanded. If I close all instances of the browser (Chrome) and re-open, and navigate to this same thread then then all the posts are still expanded.

This is not true of all threads.

Just as you have to mine treasures from Chowhound, the same is true of Yelp. Actually some real gems on Chowhound started as stufff I found on Yelp and either tried or asked about.

I had a similar feeling about yelp. However the constant long, long periods of awful, untested, periodic installations sent me over to Yelp because when this site is too buggy, I need to go elswere untill things get better.

I will admit you have to deal with the attitude reviews and after a while the shills are easy to spot, but the green M&M principle applies there as well.

Has any thought ever been given to a Home Baking board?

I see no reason to have a separate baking board. There was discussion about dropping the Dessert Cookbook of the Month feature on the Home Cooking Board and replacing it with a Baking Book of the Month, though nothing came of that. Some people felt they didn't make anough dessert recipes to give a particular cookbook a fair test drive in only one month, whereas baking covers more options.

If CH decides to add more boards, geographical ones are needed far more than hair-splitting those appealing to home cooks, and the idea of a Tabletop board to deal with selection, care, and proper usage of tableware covers territory not clearly assignable elsewhere.

Pricing china and silver is really pretty far outside the realm of what we do here -- I would imagine there are many internet forums that are better suited to that conversation. But if people do want to discuss that, then the Cookware board is where we'd allow that conversation to happen. You might not find the name as all-encompassing as you'd like, but it is the right place for that to happen.

"We just don't currently have good options for creating new boards and dealing with existing archives."

Which has always been my main point when answering queries on this subject over the years. Unfortunately this is a growing problem / moving target. Each passing day makes it worse. I truly believe that the powers that be need to open up the problem to the site users and let them comb through the archives helping to place the posts, board by new board, where they belong. I've said this before, but it's a fact that it will take a village to make a new Chowhound. And you know that there are a number of hounds on this site that would dig into a challenge like this with gusto.

Lack of ability, probably, assuming there's content to the posts and not just 'Rachael Ray sucks! Her recipes are so lame!' Weight, not likely.

Is there a lag time for edits to member recipes?

Okeydoke, I've answered my own question--yes, there is a lag. Within 15 minutes or so, my edits were now officially "in" my original recipe. Not sure if you're aware of this, so if not, here you go. Thanks!

A list of Montreal's "must-eats" should be a permanent fixture on this board [Moved from Quebec board]

This should be fixed from a functional perspective -- accents are supported now. I did check the new restaurant data that was imported for Quebec when we brought it in and I did find restaurants that seemed to have their accents in the right place, and didn't find any that seemed to be cut off, but that restaurant record pre-dates the new Restaurants function, so it may be just a holdover for records that were created in the bad old days. Here's an example of a newly created record:

http://www.chow.com/restaurants/653403/le-pois-penche

I fixed Quebecoise Hot Dog, as well: http://www.chow.com/restaurants/57130/quebecoise-hot-dog

If you want to point out bad / broken records, I'm happy to update them for you, or I can set you (or other people) up with edit access so you can update them yourself. If you'd like me to update them, please do give me the full correct name with accents in place. I'm a Toronto-anglo, and making my computer cough up accents befuddles me -- I can only do it painfully slowly by copying from the character map.

Tastes: Your Mileage May Vary. What Do We Honor as Chowhounds?

Welcome back! What an amazing trip that must have been.

I find that some things that don't interest me at first, eventually can catch my eye, like this meat grinding stuff or coffee roasting (Alan Barnes was also the first to encourage me to do that). I go back and look at old threads all the time. I need to go buy some meat now (and look for back threads on it all).

Missing users

We're going to close this thread because we don't get into discussions with the general usership about why individual users are banned from the site, but we do want to assure those reading along that a longtime contributing poster would never be suspended for "2 boo-boos". It takes a persistent pattern of problematic postings, and an email discussion with such users (giving them a chance to change the problematic behavior) before an account is suspended. There's absolutely no financial incentive for us to remove posters from the site, and we only do it when we feel the poster's behavior has degraded to the point where we are spending too much time managing the problematic posts and resulting fallout.

removed topics?

If you're asking why a thread would be removed, there are a great many reasons, most of them outlined in our Etiquette: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/367605

If you're asking why a thread would be available in Google, but not on our site, it's in the nature of the way Google works. They trawl through the site periodically and update their indexes, in between the time when we remove a thread and they revisit it, they'll think the page is still there, but when you click through, it won't be.
