Puzzling about where to post after site changes

well, I always easily navigate around among the hotposts boards. Its always been a nuisance (since the new structure) to post other than a reply to a visible post since it involves exiting and reintering through the Chowhound Boards pulldown to find older posts or initiate a new post but ok.

I had had a problem seemingly using search to find the appropriate recent thread to add my post to. the system seemed to prefer my adding a review to the Restaurant section of the site. but now I see I can do it. if I am more patient

I am still concerned about the search feature and its lack of intelligence and utility recently.

I'd like to have a "Canada" board for pan-Canadian food issues: food recalls and scandals, the good and bad about major Canadian chains and brands etc. We've tried to discuss "President's Choice" brands, but they get shifted to general boards where they are meaningless to all the US posters outside Buffalo and some other border cities that get a lot of Canadian products.

May I suggest the title of this board be amended to read Turkey/Greece/Cyprus.

Cyprus has been an independent country since 1960 and is not a region of either of the other two countries It is a member of the European Union and ceased to be part of the then Ottoman (Turkish) empire in 1914.

Help, I don't feel addicted to Chowhound anymore ! - moved from Boston board

>>> I'm sitting here all bug-eyed with my coffee, ready to read some excitement about a new place, new dish, new scene. I want to feel butterflies again

You don't have your Chowhound wings yet?

First, Chowhound is an interactive game, not a specator sport.

Second, after reading Chowhound a while, you sort of develop a sense about chow worthy places. You read about a place, see a new place opening, or take a second look at a place you've passed by for years ... and something about it promises deliciousness. So, you really don't know need Chowhound for the tips anymore. You've crawled out of your cocoon and fly on your own.

Seriously. Post about something to get activity growing. If you read about a new restaurant you are curious about, post an inquiry.

Or just walk into a place you've passed a zillion times, take a really close look at the menu. What is different about this place? Ask about the different dish and give it a try if it sounds intereting. Almost all places have something unique on the menu.

Or post about anything you like. That great cup of coffee (which reminds me I have a great coffee place I meant to post about ... a drive thru at that). Post about the terrific something you've picked up from the market or deli.

If you want activity, create it.

The SF Chowhounds have actually taken action to get new people on the board and posting.

Chowing down with the SF Bay chowhounds!
http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/668213

So what kind of coffee is that you are drinking? Post about it. Or if you are bored with it ask where to get better.

That being said, I don't think it is really the economy that is leading to fewer posts. Actually that should lead to better posts. People making more of their dwindling dollars by choosing the most delicious ... be that a hot new spot or the sandwich shop.

IMO, what is killing the posting is this dreadful software. As enthusiastic as I am, I just can't stand it anymore. I read less and less. There's lots of bells and whistles on the site ... bells that don't ring and whistles that don't toot.

And I can't believe what I read in another thread that a lot of the techinical staff is on vacation ... after a major installation. I guess the thought was that there would be no problems. Since every single installation since the site was sold has been nothing but buggy ... weeks and sometimes months of buggy ... I can't see what the assumption was made on to think this didn't need staff to shovel up the usual mess.

I know I'm not supposed to ask where my post went, but....

This was of course exactly a situation in which your deletion of the entire thread caused replies (notably, that from the owner of Bespoke) to be removed as well. Your principle would thus seem to dictate asking for an edit in this case, rather than removing the thread.

The 2 hour edit window suggests an image of nuclear-tipped missiles headed our way, where life as we know it will cease unless policy-contravening posts are eliminated quickly. Nonetheless, posts that suggest that a place may be closing without giving much in the way of evidence DO persist on CH, and civilization is not thereby disrupted. I would note in particular the inane thread at http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/667042 suggesting that a Krispy Kreme may be replaced by a Sonic, based apparently entirely on reference to an article in the New Haven Register. If you actually look at the article in question, you will see that their "evidence" consists solely of an unattributed statement by someone in the local real estate business. When I tried to point this out, my post to that effect was also deleted; I have no idea why. But in any case, and especially given the notorious undependability of the NH Register, the story about Krispy Kreme closing is not at all stronger than mine (and unlike my story about Bespoke, unconfirmed: Krispy Kreme staff have denied the place is closing, and yet the thread lives on). In fact, casual search turns up half a dozen or so threads with (undeleted) posts of the "I went by X and it looks like it's closing" variety just in the past couple of months on the New England board alone.

So, I remain unpersuaded that deleting my posts in these cases served a necessary end. I agree that there are some things that need to be kept out: the blatantly defamatory and the grossly offensive, as I said above. But in other cases, a gentler hand is surely called for, if Chow Hound is to serve the purpose of promoting discussion and the flow of information among "those who live to eat."

On really long threads with many contributors, they are so useful for finding out quickly whether you've already contributed and would be repeating yourself. With all of the tecnicacal problems contributers have to constantly contend with, to have this kind of "man made" problem just says to me that no one gives a damn about what kinds of things encourage "regulars" to stay around.

It has been one month since this has been reported. At the very least could there be some sort of reply why this has not been fixed yet?

While there has been a lot going on addressing the latest round of bugs, it becomes increasingly more difficult to understand why this can not be pushed out.

The way the site works currently, search is difficult to use, linking means nothing anymore in terms of finding records.

The only option left is marking some posts as reviews and in the Bay Area a significant and active part of it ... Wine Country ... cannot be acknowledged in any way.

I;m also curious why this isn't in Technical Help. This is a bug. ChowHQ acknowledged it as a bug. It is not opinion about a feature of the site, it is an out and out problem.

"Places Mentioned" quirk - how to report or fix?

>AFAIK, this latest release didn't go through a users beta test.

A bunch of beta testers weren't sent the e-mail announcing the beta test until it had been up for a while (I was one of them). The result was that my time on the test site was roughly half what it might have been.

Still, you and I and others did manage to point out a lot of bad stuff on the beta. But much of that stuff wound up going live anyway. I'm sure I'm not the only user thinking, What was the point, and what was the big rush?

Now other users are running into some of the same crap. Robert L. said the other day that this is the beta. Can't say he's wrong.

Erroneous posts about restaurant closings

I think it's helpful to know if a restaurant has closed. However, lately, I've seen a great deal of erroneous posts saying that restaurants have closed when they are in fact open for business. Before I post that a restaurant has closed, unless I've passed by and have seen a notice advising that the particular restaurant has closed, before posting on this board or elsewhere, I'll check some reliable sources. I really wish more people would do the same. I see it as a big problems on long threads (and frequently threads that were started years ago); sometimes a post including erroneous information might not be addressed and corrected because it gets lost in the sea of other posts. Am wondering if others have noticed this as well.

Post expansion quirk

In general the unexpanded already-read system works, but there are anomalies, and I cannot define the exact situation when they happen.

As of this moment, when I open the thread http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/661072
I see all the posts expanded, including ones I wrote. I scroll through to the end so I have 'seen' them all. I am not sure that makes any difference, but I did it anyway. If I navigate away and then navigate to the same thread it is still expanded. If I close all instances of the browser (Chrome) and re-open, and navigate to this same thread then then all the posts are still expanded.

This is not true of all threads.

Jfood wonders how many people have requested:

- Please place a gradient gray horizontal bar behind the "ATTACH PHOTO" icon on the REPLY box

Likewise if a customer request is still open after three years and that request is to to correct an typographical error while a non-functional make it pretty request gets up and done, who the heck is doing the prioritizing?

Restaurant database updates?

Sure, that works.

You can also just enter an approximate date in date opened, that's what all the staff members are doing when they don't have a precise date -- and as you've noted, opening dates for restaurants tend to be kind of nebulous in general, so we rarely do.
