You know, those tasty uber fatty behinds of the chicken. Any suggestions / ideas would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Kind of a shame for a Fourseasons flagship restaurant. Too many chef changing hands IMO. Its not like that elsewhere?! Hong Kong, Tokyo, NYC etc

In another thread, someone suggested that the large Loblaw's at Yonge and 16th Ave in Richmond Hill that converted to a No Frills might have good quality stuff initially, but then go downhill.

I was there last week, and I have to say, everything looked great. Huge selection of food products - even more than Great Canadian Superstore, since they're not selling furniture, clothes, etc. The produce looked superb, the fish tank was full of lively looking fish, the meat selection was huge (what do you do with a beef heart anyway?! Give to a captain?), and the selection of Asian products rivaled T&T's. It's been a year, and I don't see any slippage in quality or selection. If it's convenient to you, I recommend it.

Scone at Drake Cafe

I just grabbed a blueberry scone from the cafe at Drake hotel. It is the best I have had in TO. Fluffy, light, buttery. It is still warm so I guess it just came out from the oven. It is much lighter than the ones from Hank's and School. It is full of blueberry. You can taste the fruit but there is no sour taste. The only one that I find can be comparable in texture is the ones from Wagamama. However, they don't have the fruit favour.

If you love scone with fruit, Drake is the place to go.

I have chocolate under my fingernails -- A report on O Noir

Surprisingly, while I had a great deal of food on my fingers (they *REALLY* need to provide wetnaps to diners) I spilled none on my dress. Though that was primarily because I spent much of the meal bent over my plate, shoveling food in in a manner that would have seemed uncouth had anyone been able to see it.

I don't think you could replicate this experience at home, unless you have an interior basement room with no windows and a blanket over the door -- and even then I suspect you'd find that your non-load bearing walls don't actually attach to the ceiling quite as cleanly as you might have previous guessed. The "can't see my fingers even as I'm practically touching my eye" feeling of total blackness isn't the same as casual darkness.

Make sure you exit at Ontario St. Beamsville (exit #64) not to be confused with the Ontario St. exit for Grimsby. NOTL is about 20 minutes from Beamsville.

Here is my duckling and hen , marinaded in Grace's jerk, and slow cooked over charcoal, with Grace's jerk seasoning, about 4 hours, with rice and peas. The duck is Brome Lake, frozen, from T&T.

The Grace marinade and jerk seasoning were superb, although there may be scotch bonnet hot spots.

The rice and peas were spiced with Cool Running, and that was too strong for me. Not nearly as subtle as the Grace.

I've been to Fin twice now, and am very pleased. I really enjoyed the unagi don and the blowtorched saba. The sake and wasabi marinated octopus starter is also delicious. The ika sushi is phenomenally tender, and only on a very small bed of rice. I have tried a couple of the rolls, and have enjoyed them immensely. I will avoid the one with cheese on top (?!), however. I've also been pleasantly surprised by the bill at the end of the meal. I consider this a pretty nice spot. Service is very friendly, and they seem to be super customer-oriented. My second time there, I was mistakenly given two things I didn't order - which they knew at the time they presented the dish, and could simply have removed without me even knowing - and was cheerfully told they were on the house.

As for the plinky shamisen, I'm pretty convinced they had one song on repeat, rather than the whole CD. The first time, yes, the same piece played repeatedly the whole time. The second time, there were multiple different pieces.

Rocky Raccoon's Cafe - Owen Sound

There have been references to Rocky's scattered through various threads. I have also heard good things locally about it. Today we finally had lunch at Rocky's, four of us, and will gladly return.

The room seats just over thirty with no crowding whatsoever and there are a few additional spots at the bar. Casual - for lunch at least. The owner/chef is Nepalese, his partner local, and both very engaging and humorous I'm told.

The room is very, very comfortable - there is a full sense of complete fun and relaxation. There were tables with kids - no problem - very child friendly.

Decor. Is there such a thing as Buddhist funky? Very entertaining prints and decorative Eastern items.

Now the funky: there must be hundreds, if not thousands, of salt and pepper shakers on display shelves lining pretty well every available wall in the place. Amazing.

Today the establishment was stretched. 2nd Ave (Owen Sound's main street) was closed off for a sidewalk sale. The restaurant had a serving station in front of the shop and it was super busy. The inside menu was cut back and the buffet was cancelled. No big deal.

A single waitress served a half full house for lunch including several four-seaters or better and newbies like ourselves with questions. She had to explain the truncated menu and the items to most of us and we never noticed her absence. Our water, refills, silly requests and questions were answered with grace on a "bad" shift. Full tip with great pleasure.

Normally there is a buffet @ $15 per. Items I recall were: rice; samosas; spring rolls; vegetarian curry; beef curry; curried cabbage; butter chicken, and venison vindaloo. Plus a few others i can't recall.

Our "emergency" a la carte choices included: samosas; "momos (sp?)"; vegatarian curry; beef curry; various salads &tc. Beer was also on short supply. Two of us opted for "Headstrong", an English style bitter brewed in Guelph - very robust and a fine counterpoint to the heat - no better pairing than beer and curry.

A round of samosas, one for each (2 per order.) I was surprised by the potato mixture. Rather than cubed the potatoes were a mash. The peas were there but less heat than I'm used to in a vegetarian samosa. Very tasty filling, but the sauce made it - I would like to say tamarind but it carried a good deal of heat that made a nice nibble.

One order of momos(sp?), which I was told by staff, was the "fast food" equivalent of a hamburger in Nepal. Eight steamed dumplings containing a seasoned, spicy (not hot) beef filling. These are served with a mildly hot, spicy tamarind(?) dip and a chutney of coriander and chili pepper. The momos were for me the best part of the meal because their flavour came back to me hours later on the drive home. Crude as it is, that's my test.

Mains. My wife and I are small lunch eaters. We had some apps and split the vegetarian curry. Green and red peppers, zucchini tomatoes. The kids opted each for beef curry.

The curries. They came with: choice of curry; basmati with toasted coconut and (?) - oh, very good - and cabbage, probably braised in creamed coconut or coconut milk (use your spoon for the sauce) and also very good.

Guests had beef curry with same sides as the veggie stuff. Rocky's doesn't play games with heat. There is ranking of one to ten - your server will ask you. Max at our table was eight and some agreed that 10 would be fine.

Lunch for 4 was $73 with tip and items above.

I studied the dinner menus and the mains are int he $22 range. Now, there you have a choice of curries and each has a sub-listing: Nepalese; Vietnamese; Iindan, or Thai.

Allservings including apps are very generous.

Forte vs. Nota Benne for a special meal?

Yes, when I was young and foolish I invited new friends over for dinner and tried a new recipe, in new cookware in an oven I hadn't used before..... total disaster!!
I took my client to Nota Bene and she loved everything except the fierce chill of the AC - we took turns going to the bathroom where it's warm! But I will try Forte one of these days - I like the menu and the room looks so nice.

I agree with everyone on this chain,
I had a number of issues with the place:
1.I had bought two:
mine: caramel topping, by the time I got it home (which was about ten plus minutes) it was rock hard and I swear I saw him put topping on it but I could not taste any of it.
the other: apple and cinnamon, the person who had it said it was nice.
2. the price stupidly expensive
3. the server, when I paid by credit card the waiter had given me the credit card machine since it was take out I did not give a tip but as soon as he saw there was no tip, he had no interest in having anything to do with me (I am sorry but that sort of attitude makes me never want to come back)
4. the menu, I found the description written in cursive was hard to read.

I might be to picky, when I got mine home and added some dulce de leche and more icing suger, it was tasty but for the price I rather go to wonderland at least I get to go on the ghoster coaster that way

Yeah, we just went to Toula for summerlicious, managed to get a lake view, which was nice, and had an extremely so-so meal. Lamb was good, but the sides were meh. Wife was unimpressed with her surf and turf. The desserts were blah. the wine list is joke. Service not bad. And no it doesn't rotate: apparently new owners took over the space about 8 years ago, and wanted to put a bar where a generator was. No more rotation. I wouldn't have been impressed had I been stuck on the city side.

I don't know for sure, but the King of the Kings ramen I had tasted really good today. I would agree the service is a little muddled, (not bad, but it's day 2), and that the kitchens are super slow.

I'd wait a bit before visiting or bring your DS/newspaper/whatever along with you. It's not a quick meal right now. I would think these are new-resto woes though.

The Real Jerk?

Yum2MyTum- although I like the chicken roti better, it comes down to whether you want a drier dish- jerk chicken is a type of bbq chicken (forgive me anyone from the West Indies for simplifying it like this), whereas roti is a curry served wrapped in a roti skin ( a flatbread). If you like moist dishes with sauce, roti is they way to go, but if you like grilled/bbq chicken/ribs, go with the jerk :) If you like moister dishes with lots of sauce, I'd recommend going with roti or curry chicken.

It's also possible to order a side of jerk chicken ($5), which would give you an idea what jerk chicken can be like, so you get an idea of whether you'd want to seek out a better version another time at another place. There's also several combos on the menu, if you want to try curry chicken and jerk (as well as other combos) at the same time, to figure out which suits you better.

I also would recommend a side order of plantain (pronounced planten) :)

Bamburger BIG disappointment

After reading a favourable review of Bamburger in the Village Post I thought I would give this place a try. Arrived at 6pm on a Sunday night and there where three tables filled with families. The menu mentioned the Turkey Burger which was described as "Lean and tender turkey meat" I ordered this and my wife ordered the spinach salad with light dressing. Burger arrived with a small portion of fries looked good. My wife's salad was covered with dressing...I guess light means different things to different people. It also was missing apples as described in the menu. Overall she was disappointed by the salad. Once I bit into the burger I could tell it was not freshly made there...conjured up images of the frozen burgers from the grocery store. Not a great meal for $25 wont be returning anytime soon. I will say the decor was great.

Truffles review

Since Turffles will be closing down once the Four Seasons moves to its new location - I figured I should give this old school favorite a try. It had been a LONG time since I'd been - not exactly on the hot list these days. Once I found out about the $39 for 2 course or $49 for 3 course special....in was in and we went on Thursday.

The room is still elegant - if a bit dated. Felt like I was in a resto that was once grand but was now just old. But it was nice to be in a resto that wasn't blasting music so you could hear each other and whose tables were spread out enough that you weren't on top of each other.

When we arrived they had the air conditioning cranked WAY up and my goosebumps had goosebumps. I asked them to turn in down and they were VERY accomodating. Took care of it immediately and them came back to make sure I was warmer. This high level of service continued throughout the meal.

So...the meal. Bottom line is that my meal was great. My husband's was ok.

I had the kampachi crudo which was lovely. The fish was very flavourful and the pairing with the mild grapefruit and radish was perfect. My main was the scallops with violet artichokes, baby potatoes and clams. I had them leave out the chorizo as I don't eat meat. The dish was amazing! One of the better scallop dishes I've had in a long time.

My husband started with the wild mushrooms and taglietelli (sp?) which was good but not great. He then had the lamb which was also good but not great. Also - they add $9 to the price of the lamb ....not sure why.

We each had a glass of wine and I had a glass of sparkling wine.

No desserts.

So our bill came to $144.

Do I think it was worth it? Sure. The food was good. The service was good. To try once before it is no longer...sure. But if it were going to stick around - I can't say I'd retrun. It feels dated and old without an attractive vibe and the food seems to be a bit hit or miss.

Wow! What recession? - Another high end Dim Sum restaurant in Richmond Hill!

i was looking forward to eating that teen ha di yat bau, i tried to order it but the hapless waitress had no idea what i was talking about, i even showed them this post on my bb, they couldn't help me.

in any case lunch yesterday was good, went after a round of golf in the am so was hungry. as rec'd by Charles Yu and Skyline I ordered the abalone puff which was piping hot, flaky with excellent abalone flavor, not to mention generous chunks of abalone. the crust was very filling however, i can't imagine how much shortening/lard is in it!

har gow and shiu mai were also well above average, as were the steamed pork ribs. the 5-spice deep fried chicken wings were gigantic, juicy and very flavorful. we also got the deep fried pumpkin which was a pleasant surprise (i.e. good!)

booked for my bday dinner in 2 weeks as they have a set dinner with the maggi lobster and pigeon, really looking forward to it. corkage is free if negotiated, so will be bring some wines from my cellar waiting for a worthy meal! i think will bring a rose champagne for the lobster and a nice burgundy for the pigeon.

can't wait. and thanks for the recs

btw i had lunch and dinner at Yang's recently, both very good. haven't dined chinese in a while in toronto, so was pleasantly surprised at the calibre.... recall the glory yesteryears of fondly departed Grand Yatt and Bayview Garden.
