Fresh Direct -- How's the Fruit?

I have used fresh direct since they began, and let me say first I appreciate not having to haul heavy items home, like water and detergent. The fruit is another story. I have come to find the star rating system is pure hog-wash. I have had so many bad orders lately that I am just putting it out there if anyone is interested. In past few months, I have gotten mangos that never ripened, just developed rotten spots, cantaloupe that also just developed rotten spots without ripening, and red grapes last week rated "4 stars" that had skins so thick they were inedible. When you buy an item rated very good, it should be accurate. I will say I have found the vegetables to be very good, but the rating system is pure fiction.

Honey

I'm so not averse to mail order honey that I have quite a bit enroute from an upstate apiary even as I post; if anyone's interested, I'll be happy to post my impressions. And I'm aware of Savannah although I loathe coffee and its flavor, although I love the way it smells (thanks for the suggestion, though). I should mention that Really Raw used to list monofloral varietals on their site although I don't know if they still do. They're the ones who really introduced me to raw (I won't buy anything else now) and they have a unique way of cooling their honey that results in an unusually smooth product when it crystallizes. I'm still hoarding some bamboo and purple loosestrife that I bought some years back that were out of this world.

Savannah's black sage and Winter White both looked interesting; I can get their other varietals elsewhere. One thing that bothers me about their site is that although it mentions that their honey is raw, it doesn't state "unheated." It's apparently legal to heat honey to a certain temperature in order to bottle it and still label it "raw." I always look for "unheated" on my honey labels.

I remember Loft's store on Steinway St. in Astoria, NY and the factory someone mentioned here...you could see the sign coming over the 59th St bridge from Manhattan. I do remember the wonderful butter crunch, but really miss the Parlay bars....that candy bar was pure delight...In a gold foil wrapper with red lettering. We used to buy them just before we went into the now gone Astoria Theater...where the ceiling was midnight blue with little stars that actually twinkled. Lofts candy was the best I ever tasted. I'm 62, living in CA and still remember it. Last box I bought was in 1986 on Wall St. Ken

Anyone know if Samsong (Thai rum) is avail in NYC?

Sang Som is most definitely, indisputably, rum. it's made from sugarcane and sugarcane byproducts. the fact that Thais don't typically distinguish between rum and whiskey accounts for its often being referred to as whisky by Thais. 'whisky' here is made from rice, typically.

i live in Thailand so i keep a close eye on these things...

I managed to get that recipe and prepared them often at the restaurant where I worked in the mid-70s. Stir-fried periwinkles sound like stir-fried marbles in the wok!

Best Steak House in NYC? [moved from Manhattan]

Best? To who? We all understand about chocolate and vanilla. Opinions make the world go around. Do I think Peter Luger is the best in all of NYC? No, not for my everyday tastes, wants, desires, etc. Would I argue with anyone who said they think it is? No. Why? Because I can see it and I understand. I like Luger's very much. I rate it as one of the best in NYC. Without question.

If I want a Luger-experience, coupled with a porterhouse, then I go there. For that, without question, it's the best. Embellish that with some mutant tomatoes and onions, and some thick-cut bacon . . . oh boy, you are in heaven now. LOL.

However, if I want a different experience -- I go to others on my "one of the best" list. I don't know anyone who goes to Luger's for a "fine dining" experience, or white-glove type cater to you service. Part of the experience is what it's known for, the ambiance, or lack of, LOL, the service -- or some say lack of, LOL.

I was always a fan of Mark Joseph's and Wolfgang's. I was also a big fan of Angelo & Maxie's, although I know many people were not. Their porterhouse was not anywhere near as good as Luger -- but that was for my tastes. I was always a fan of some of the other "greats" so to speak, mainly Sparks, the Palm, Smith & Wolinksy, and the Old Homestead. I rated the Old Homestead at the top of the list of those four.

I would guess that pound-for-pound, no pun intended, Peter Luger would top many people's best list.

Bowery - resturant recommendations

Spending this upcoming weekend in the Bowery, made a reservation at Gemma and Balthazar for dinner on Fri and Sat nights - how are those places?

I'm hoping to have a great Chinese dim sum meal - can anyone make a recommendations?

Much thanks,

I am from Algonac, Michigan and love Vernor's! I love how the bubbles and the ginger are so prominent that it makes you sneeze when taking your first sip. I always bring a few six packs back to NYC in my suitcase. Sure wish you could buy it here . . . . . .

Best Fresh Pasta In New York

If you would like to take the train to Brooklyn you must try Pasta Fresca on 64th street and 11th Ave - only two blocks from the N train! Another great pasta place is Pastoza on 75th and New Utrecht Ave. Its right below train tracks - I think the D or B, but not sure. Both places make very fresh pasta.

The last time we ate at The Kilt is was so gross. Greasy and overdone food. I do like the burger at Ruby's very much and last weekend had a very good burger at Westchester Burger Company. I ordered the Bison burger and it was delicious!!

Chantilly is a new bakery in Bronxville on Parkway Road opposite the train station. You might find what you want there.

In my experience, the cakes from Riviera that have come out of the refrigerator case can sometimes have an off taste. However, anytime I have ordered a custom cake fromt there, it has been excellent.
