Who Has The Best Christmas Panettone in The Boroughs?

Ok my 88 year old (soon to be 89) Grandfather has been buying panettone on Bleecker Street in Manhattan his whole life, he goes to either Bruno's (no longer there, now in Staten Island where he lives) and or Rocco's. As the years goes by he is getting crabbier and keeps saying "it’s not the way it used to be", he is done with both Rocco’s & Bruno’s. He is looking for an authentic dense, fruit filled and moist Genovese style (not Milanese) Panettone. No box suggestions please either. I will travel with him wherever. HELP!!!

you are pretty much limited to the outer boroughs when it comes to indonesian so I'd throw your search queries on that board. what will come up is all basically in elmhurst: upi jaya, minangasli, mie jakarta. there are some malay/indo hybrids in chinatown and probably some other places in queens. and throughout the summertime, you will need to wait for the well-documented indonesian food bazaars held at the Al-Hikmah mosque in Astoria.

Check out the chili at Daisy May's Bar-B-Q on 11th Ave and 45th Street (I believe) or their street cart on 50th Street between 6th and 7th Aves. Call the restaurant first to find out if the cart is out the same day you want to go. They are usually open 11am to 3pm but they do sell out of items towards the end of the day. No tomatoes, grround beef or beans in this chili. Chunks of beef in a thick, rich and spicy concoction of chiles and spices. I've had it maybe half a dozen times and I love it more each time.

Sabroso, 22 Garden Street, Rhinebeck ,NY

A friend took me to Sabroso for dinner on Sunday evening. It was a touch of Manhattan dining in the quaint town of Rhinebeck. The decor was calming and relaxing. The menu is Spanish (as in Spain) with an extensive Tapas menu and entrees that can please all. I had the Seafood Paella, my friends had the skirt steak and scallops over risotto. We were all pleased with our selections. We had the Chef's selection Tapas tray for an appetizer which included calamari, cerviche, shrimp and croquettes.
Everthing was prepared with fresh ingredients, very light and tasty. No heavy sauces or spices.
Would highly reccommend Sabroso to everyone.

Best Of NYC Self Walking Tour of Upper West Side

Upper West Side Museum & Foodie Tour
Best in class: Museum, Burger, Hot Dog, Cocoa, Cookie.

I took the great LES walking tour posted by another CH member and had a great experience. Thought I would give back and share a little tour I found on my own.
Start out at the American Museum of Natural History and take in all the great exhibits offered by one of the premiere museums in the country. American Museum of Natural History 79 Central Park West, New York - (212) 769-5700.

After you finish at the museum, if you exit on Central Park West, you will go right, and then turn right on the first street that runs along side the museum, 77th, and go down until you get to the corner at Columbus Ave where you will find The Shake Shack where you can get a $4.75 version of the famous Pat LaFrieda burgers sold elsewhere for almost $30(different meat blend at Minetta Tavern), get one Shack Burger, you'll want more, but hold back, you'll need room for what is coming next. Shake Shack 366 Columbus Ave, New York - 646-747-8770.

After leaving the Shake Shack, continue the same direction on 77th until you reach Amsterdam and turn left and go to the corner of 72nd, where Broadway intersects Amsterdam, and you will find Gray's Papaya, considered by many the best hot dog in New York. You might want to try the papaya drink too!
Gray's Papaya 2090 Broadway # 1, New York - 212-799-0243.

After leaving Gray's, go back in the opposite direction on Amsterdam until you pass 73rd and reach Jacques Torres, the chocolate master himself for a cup of the best hot chocolate on the planet, get the regular or get brave and ask for the Wicked Blend made with chiles which will fire you up! Jacques Torres 285 Amsterdam Ave, New York - 212-787-3256.

Then, continue the same direction on Amsterdam until you reach 74th, cross the street and go right to Levain Bakery on the corner for "Possibly the largest, most divine chocolate chip cookies in Manhattan." These babies weigh about a pound each and are divine.
Levain Bakery 167 West 74th St New York, NY 10023-212-874-6080.

By the way, there are two great NY specialy grocers in the area as well. Fairway and Citarella are both on the same block of Broadway between 74th and 75th.
I just visited NYC last week and found this mini tour on my own. I set it up as real food first, dessert last. Hope I got the turns correct, I checked on google maps and all looked good. One thing I can be sure of, you will not be disappointed by any of these wonderful places.

Great, SAVORY Pumpkin Ravioli!

I love pumpkin ravioli in theory, but haven't been able to find one that doesn't taste like pumpkin pie. Does a wholly savory packaged version exist in New York - no cinnamon, no brown sugar? If it comes to it, I'll make my own...!

chipotle! i kid. hasn't anyone here ever been to chavella's in prospect (or crown) heights? on classon & park. tiny place, great atmosphere, nice staff. not everything is killer, but some standouts:
tomatillo soup - spicy & tart, with a swirl of crema
elotes - yummy grilled corn on the cob with hot pepper powder, mayo and crumbled cheese
quesadilla de huitlacoche - 'corn truffle', kinda like a black mushroom
plato don - great value, a big platter of soft taco fixins

So far I have found that the only gluten free beer that comes close to tasting like the real stuff and still gives you that nice beer buzz is Green's. Are there any other's of note, preferably nothing sweet and whimpy like Bard's?

Caramel Apples

Actually I have to respectfully disagree, there's an amazing chocolate shop in Geneva, IL that makes the best chocolate & caramel apples ever. Graham's Chocolate makes these thing first with caramel then by drizzling chocolate and sometimes nuts or marshmallows or other confections...on them...DELISH! These are usually HUGE johnagold or golden deliscious apples and they are simply the best!

best tasting fruit

I know a lot of this depends on the season but lately I've been trying some new exotic fruits (jackfruit, longan, etc). I was just wondering which you guys thought tasted best. My favorites so far have been haiwaiian papaya, south africa rosemarie pear (i think), and yellow mangoes from an indian supermarket. Close runner ups were cactus plants and starfruit. But I think my favorite fruit in general is the classic clingstone georgia peach.

i know it's gross but i had one time: pig stomach with chili peppers, braised seaweed, bamboo shoots, jellyfish; not sure if they actually switch up the selection each night but ya, it could be worse. honestly i went to coco for takeout and all the noodles were like 7 or 8 dollars, and not $5.95 so i decided to walk up the block and that's where i saw the place.
