Black Bear Meats

I always bought Thumann's franks but they are sometimes hard to find and expensive. I tried the natural casing Black Bear and they are our favorite now. I also bought their American Cheese which was delicious and comparable to Land of Lakes. My grandson swears by their roast beef which I have not tried yet but from here on, Black Bear is for us.

Whole Belly (Ipswich) Fried Clams

Clambelly, sounds like you have pretty good info on fried clams.. I grew up 2 miles from Woodman's and learned to make fried clams as a high school kid at several restaurants nearby which all used the same method as Chubby. A couple of thoughts:
1. I think you have found most of the best places: Woodman's is great, Farnham's is my favorite because of the gourgeous view from the picnic tables, but the Clam Box in Ipswich might be your best spot if you don't want to drive so far from Int. 95 on your trips north. I did not see you mention that and they often claim the local title for "best." All 3 are kings.
2. Now that I live in NY (Westchester), I have been on a similar quest for years, it's such a joke that nobody can get it right in NYC, but it is also largely dependant on the distribution of the clams which are not necessarily from Ipswich and Essex flats, but they are distributed by "Ipswich Shellfish Co."

http://www.ipswichshellfish.com/

They have a distribution point in CT (Branford) and that area is the closest to us for decent fried clams. Someone above mentioned "Joe & Lenny's", they have two locations, one in lovely Madison, CT right across from Hammonassett SP Beach, you might even think you are in Essex. They serve RI style chowder, but nobody's perfect. I include Madison, right off 95, on my year round trips north/Cape, when I can.

3. I am particularly sad that your local Legal Sea Foods is not serving good fried clams, not sure what store you go to, but the one in White Plains, NY does a decent job usually. You might talk to the manager and ask them to look into it. I know from experience that if the kid working the fri-o-later does not know what he is doing, then they are going to be messed up. There lots of ways to mess up fried clams, but Legal should have the ingredients and tools of the trade to make decent clams. I travel to Boston quite a bit, and their local Boston locations get high marks. When I don't have time to go to the North Shore, I will go there. Their clam chowder should be very good, if not, whatever store you are going to is very messed up.

Not to change the subject, but fried clams are one of two foods, NY can't seem to get right. There is a style of roast beef sandwich, also from the North Shore of Boston, which is amazingly simple and tasty. Hot, thinly sliced on hamburg buns, you can add to it with cheese or bbq sauces, but it is so good plain with salt and pepper. Not far from Woodman's in North Beverly, MA is "Nick's Roast Beef." "Kelly's Roast Beef" which started on Revere Beach has become a large chain...they have good fried clams, chowder, onion rings, plus the roast beef sandwiches and I give them an A- for each, and an A+ for putting them under one roof. I have posted here many times about the sandwiches, can't seem to find them within 200 miles.

Blueberry Picking

I recommend Secor Farm on Robinson Lane in Wappingers Falls, NY. It is actually located at the intersection of the towns of LaGrange, Wappingers, and East Fishkill in Dutchess County New York, about 90 minutes north of New York City. From the Taconic Parkway, take the Noxon Road Exit (just north of Route 82). At the light at the end of the ramp, take a left onto Noxon Road, and at the T intersection, turn right to stay on Noxon Road. At the next light, Robinson Lane, turn left. Secor's is just ahead on the left. They have pick your own and pre-picked blueberries, strawberries, and pumpkins in season, but fresh seasonal produce and even flowers at their farmstand. For more information, call the berry picking hotline at 845-452-6883 or visit them at www.facebook.com/secorfarm.

What is your "guilty pleasure" restaurant?

Colony Pizza in Stamford (coming soon to Fairfield) has to be the ultimate GUILTY pleasure I've got goin' right now. First of all the pizza is small enough to eat yourself, but not too small where you feel hungry still. But that not even the half of it... On top of said pizza, I get pepperoni (the size of small softballs), sausage from DIRECTLY ACROSS THE STREET and just to put the big fat cherry on my big fat pie, hot oil. Oil infused with jalapenos.

Ok, that turkey on wheat I just had for lunch aint gonna cut it... I can get pizza if I go to the gym twice tomorrow, right?

Gino's is on Willis Ave in Willsiton Park, they were just rated 3rd best pizzeria on LI. Please let me know if you have ever had the pleasure of eating there. Fantastic pizzas all around but what really makes them stand out is the sicilian. Thick but crispy crust, just the right amound of sauce and delicious romano and parm blend on top - no mozzerella! Live in Florida now but I crave a slice of this like no other.

Kahlua Spiced Holiday Nog - WHERE?

OK, my parent's are raving about this drink - they can't find it anywhere in Dutchess County!! I'm, in Westchester - can anyone suggest a spot to find this so my parents can be happy for another month? Photo is attached below, handy reference for sightings :-)

As for non-alcoholic nog, my vote is with Horizon Low-Fat or Ronnybrook mixed with some regular milk - it's like tar coming out of the bottle!

Happy Nog Season everyone!

Try it again -- Mannions was sold a while back and the then new owners wrecked it in what seems like record time. Mannions family took it back, ran it for while and now recently sold it to a partnership with very highly rated NYC experienced folks working for them. Food is excellent - as good as manhattan and in many cases better than.

southside restaurant in poughkeepsie north of IBM in the TJMaxx shopping center has good wings, they also have a super super hot variety.

Handshakes Grill on 82 in Hopewell is ok too.

Noahs Bar in poughkeepsie has free wings on fridays 5-7 or something like that, dont expect to get any though unless you go when Marist is not in session.

Last time i was at golden rail the fryer wasnt working, but they do have the best selection of beer around.

So where do you suggest I go in Stamford, not too spicy as my insides can't deal with anything to spicy anymore. Love the bread, veggies and tandoori. Thanks Want a placethat has a alot of variety in the breads , that is my favorite and i love the onion condiment and the green condiment they give with it too! So tell me where and what to order and if they deliver that is great also.

Reinwald's is very basic, generic stand alone bakery. Meaning most of the stuff they have is better than supermarket quality, but I haven't had anything that stood out. I'm with MCF; Fiorrello Dolce is virtually around the corner, and almost everything I've had there is superb. I bake quite a bit, and it's one of the few places I would consider buying from rather than making my own. Even stopping in for breakfast -- they make a great almond croissant.
