great fajitas in westchester county please?

You said you wanted great ones, you didn't specify that they were supposed to be authentically Mexican.

We had a delicious dinner at Santa Fe this past week after not going there for years. My husband and son each had fajitas, each with a different assortment--one had them with a variety of vegetables including cactus, the other with steak. They are each discerning eaters and were really happy with their meals.

Across the street from Gutterman;s (the funeral home) is Ben's Kosher deli (decent but not great) Also in the same shopping Center is Butera;s(moderate Italian, good pastas, generous portions) and Laguna Grill (salads, Fajitas, some sea food- moderate to upper moderate prices). They just opened the Sage Bistro in the same shopping Center. I have not tried that location but they have a place on the south shore(French style can be a little more pricey? Next to Gutterman's is a decent diner. There are plenty other places in the immediate vicinity ,(If you stay on Jerich Turnpike it will be nearly impossible to get lost) Gabby's Bagels and Woodbury Pizza are almost directly across Jericho from Guttermans, are two other inexpensive options.

Shiva Natarajan -- owner of Malabar Hill in Elmsford and restaurants in NYC, Greenwich, Stamford, Norwalk, Westport and Brewster -- is planning to open a Mexican restaurant in the space formerly occupied by Oporto on East Hartsdale Avenue, according to Greenburgh town supervisor Paul Feiner. Expected opening in February 2010.

Meanwhile, try truly authentic Mexican *nearby* in White Plains at:
-- Mariachi Loco, in Olympic Plaza, 394 Central Park Ave. [http://mariachilocoinc.com/]
-- Gourmet Laguna, formerly Flores Deli, just off Central Park Ave. at 10 Cross St.
or
-- Cancun Delights, 16 East Post Road, near White Plains Hospital.

Sorry, I have never been to MPP Buffet....but I go for lunch or dinner a couple of times of year. It's always very pleasant for me. I DO NOT eat out on holidays ever, mostly due to crowds.......but I will say this, anyone who has won the Cooking Olympics, as Gaspard Caloz has in the past......would only put out a spread he felt was very good. I can recall many years ago when he first opened in Bergenfield, his very first New Year's Eve service was incredible, 11 courses for a mere $65.....It may have been one of the best value meals I have ever had.

Had to try the lobster quesadilla as a second course. So tasty! Then the steak with a potato and chorizo hash, spinach and chimichuri. I can eat that all day. Last night the drink special was a beer or margarita and a shot of tequilla for $7. I'm going on NFL Sunday for the $15 combo platter (sliders, wings, quesadillas and tostones I believe) and a bucket of beers for $10.

But I find it fun to go there ( waitstaff is incompetent but usually really nice), its entertaining. The food sucks but I have a soft spot for the small ( six slice ) garlic, sausage and cherry pepper pizza. The small pies are better than the large, I think it has something to do with how thin they are.

There is a Burger King and also a McDonalds outside Southampton Village, unfortunately that may be your only option. Maybe Corner Bar would be open? Or one of the pizzarias? Once the season is over, everyone makes up for all the lost holidays of the summer. You'd better ask your hosts to check around, or call the Sag Harbor Chamber of Commerce.
Oh, one place I just thought of, MAYBE and it would be great for kids, is Ziggys, just south of town. Call them and ask 537-6060. You never know.

Anyone know if My Candi in Bellmore is still open for business?

Darkstar Two,

My Candi is open and thriving. What a beautiful store and not only do they have Pomegranate jelly bellys but alsso 23 other flavors of jelly belly. They also have M & M color works, pucker powder and a huge selection of gourmet pretzels and chocolates. They have literally 100's of different candies as well as gifts, novelties and lots of kids stuff. It is well worth the trip to the store.

Where to go for Thanksgiving dinner - Briarcliff Manor area

Travelers rest is a nightmare for Thanksgiving, overcrowded, dirty, skimpy portions. Think Mothers day at a cheap buffet. Overflowing busbuckets, the dining dead (much older diners), screaming babies.
I had T-day at Iron horse grill and it was terrific, and reasonable. also Kittle House and Peter Pratt's Inn.

Holiday-time brunch for a group of about 20

I searched for brunch on the board, and didn't really find what I was looking for...

I'm organizing a brunch for a group of women, mostly between 25 and 45. I'd like it to be somewhere in lower to mid-Westchester on a Sunday in December. Looking for something with good food and a festive (or at the very least nice) atmosphere. Prix Fixe is a bonus, but not a necessity.

TIA!

CHAT American Grill- 2 thumbs up!

I had dinner at Chat last week with a group of 6. We had a reservation and we were seated right away. It was packed at 8:00 on a Wednesday and we were surprised because it was the opening night of the World Series (husbands all stayed home to watch the game!).

I started with a salad with goat cheese and beets it was very large and tasty. Then I had a turkey and brie panini with cranberries and it came with fries. The sandwich was also very good. Although I didn't taste it, my friend ordered the steamed artichoke appetizer and it looked great. She really enjoyed it. Some people at the table had the grilled tuna sandwich for an entree and they seemed to enjoy that (I don't like tuna). I can't remember what everyone else got, but we were all there for the first time and overall everyone really enjoyed their food.

Some had a glass of wine, others just had Diet Coke. We each had an appetizer and an entree (or sandwich of some sort) and with tip it came to $40pp. I liked it a lot and I look forward to going back. Only downside was that it was very noisy...

Assaggio Ristorante On The Water - Stratford, CT (203) 381-9200

So, I saw in the Local -Eyez on Milford an ad for this restaurant, located in the former location of Margarita Grille and before that Red Fin. At The Dock Shopping Plaza across from BJ's, 955 Ferry Boulevard. Nothing good ever seems to go in there, and it is such a nice location on the river (albeit under the Moses Wheeler highway overpass). Ad says "Serving contemporary italian cuisine for lunch and dinner" and "Under New Ownership." No website I could find other than some ads for servers. Let's hope they hire some trained professionals, not the local pretty big-breasted HS girls and their boyfriends like the Red Fin. Servers can make quite the difference, so I hope they don't make that mistake again. I called the Assagio in Branford, and the host said they are unrelated, but he found it funny how similar the name and even the way the A looks in the title. They could only be so lucky to be as good as Assaggio in Branford. Anyway, if you are brave enough to try it, let us know how it is.

Red Fin was trying to be upscale, then Margarita Grille went casual hoping to get all the Stratford 20-year-olds since Harborside was having some issues with their patrons. How will this fare; should be interesting.

Highlawn Pavilion

That was a small concern beforehand too. I thought people seated at the far ends would be unhappy that they could not really see the dance floor or the dj/band. When we, and our wedding party, entered the room people on the far ends got up and stood where they could see us. We only had around 75-80 people so we closed off parts of the far ends of the main dining area.

We timed the reception so that people entered the restaurant while it was till faily light outside. They came in and enjoyed the cocktail portion in the "dance" area and in the smaller seated area. We kept all of the curtains closed. By the time the cocktail portion finished it was dark outside and they opened the curtains to the beautiful view.

There used to be a place which sold roasted chickens in the A&P shopping center in Wykagyl. They are gone.

Does anyone know where to get a comparable chicken, other than supermarkets?

Thank you.
