Whole Belly (Ipswich) Fried Clams

Well, I don't mean to be obnoxious. I know I've been beating this topic to death over the past couple of years, but I felt the need to update--after all, it's been nearly 3 years since the last post on the subject of WBCs. I want to be fair, so I'm going to admit that my addiction has taken me back to Bigelow's a couple of time, and I'm happy to report that it was better both times. The french fries are decidedly better, although I usually don't bother with them (um, I can get good fries almost anywhere). The clams, though, were better, though still not in the league with Essex, Farnham's or Woodman's, but then, we Long Island beggars can't be choosy can we?

Wusthof sale

If you are near Chicago, rather than New York (or now I believe Wusthof is located in Connecticut) and are looking for warehouse sale prices, there's a cutlery store called Cutlery and More in the Chicago NW burbs that has a lot of Wusthof at their warehouse sales. Just passing the word along -- I went last time and picked up a Classic Santoku for next to nothing. They have mostly first quality stuff, but if you get there early on the first day you might have a shot at getting some "seconds" which are basically returns with just scratches on them or no box. VERY cheap.

Of course, if you know Wusthof you'll know these knives last a lifetime!

Blueberry Picking

I recommend Secor Farm on Robinson Lane in Wappingers Falls, NY. It is actually located at the intersection of the towns of LaGrange, Wappingers, and East Fishkill in Dutchess County New York, about 90 minutes north of New York City. From the Taconic Parkway, take the Noxon Road Exit (just north of Route 82). At the light at the end of the ramp, take a left onto Noxon Road, and at the T intersection, turn right to stay on Noxon Road. At the next light, Robinson Lane, turn left. Secor's is just ahead on the left. They have pick your own and pre-picked blueberries, strawberries, and pumpkins in season, but fresh seasonal produce and even flowers at their farmstand. For more information, call the berry picking hotline at 845-452-6883 or visit them at www.facebook.com/secorfarm.

What is your "guilty pleasure" restaurant?

Colony Pizza in Stamford (coming soon to Fairfield) has to be the ultimate GUILTY pleasure I've got goin' right now. First of all the pizza is small enough to eat yourself, but not too small where you feel hungry still. But that not even the half of it... On top of said pizza, I get pepperoni (the size of small softballs), sausage from DIRECTLY ACROSS THE STREET and just to put the big fat cherry on my big fat pie, hot oil. Oil infused with jalapenos.

Ok, that turkey on wheat I just had for lunch aint gonna cut it... I can get pizza if I go to the gym twice tomorrow, right?

Gino's is on Willis Ave in Willsiton Park, they were just rated 3rd best pizzeria on LI. Please let me know if you have ever had the pleasure of eating there. Fantastic pizzas all around but what really makes them stand out is the sicilian. Thick but crispy crust, just the right amound of sauce and delicious romano and parm blend on top - no mozzerella! Live in Florida now but I crave a slice of this like no other.

As for non-alcoholic nog, my vote is with Horizon Low-Fat or Ronnybrook mixed with some regular milk - it's like tar coming out of the bottle!

Mannions family took it back, ran it for while and now recently sold it to a partnership with very highly rated NYC experienced folks working for them. Food is excellent - as good as manhattan and in many cases better than.

Reinwald's is very basic, generic stand alone bakery. Meaning most of the stuff they have is better than supermarket quality, but I haven't had anything that stood out. I'm with MCF; Fiorrello Dolce is virtually around the corner, and almost everything I've had there is superb. I bake quite a bit, and it's one of the few places I would consider buying from rather than making my own. Even stopping in for breakfast -- they make a great almond croissant.

Agree on Plates.

La Sala is good and dependable, as is La Villetta.

A more unique place is Zitoune.

Avoid Lusardi and La Riserva like the plague.

Looking for Food in Hudson, New York

I would strongly recommend Wunderbar & Bistro. It has a good bar and well prepared Austrian-German food and an attentive owner. And reasonable prices. Try the schnizel or the bratwurst. The menu's at www.wunderbarandbistro.com

I personally don't like the chicken fries. The first time they were ok. The next time they had a funky taste. Maybe the oil was off or they were old I don't know but we have not had th em again.

Insieme Ristorante -- off the beaten path in Ridgefield

We eat at Insieme almost every week and love it. The food is delicious. The fish specials are always a winner as is the pasta with Italian sausage. Be sure to try the tiramisu! Sal is a great host in his warm, cozy restaurant.

It is also an excellent option for lunch. We were there for our office lunch this week and I enjoyed a great pasta dish with artichoke hearts, zuchini, gorgonzola and walnuts. Yum!

It is definitely worth the effort to find Insieme!

New Year's Eve Dinner in Lake Placid with Six Year olds?

LP is not a foodie destination. I have been heading up there for upwards of 20 years, and can offer up only a small handful of fairly good restaurants for dinner (there are a couple pretty decent breakfast lunch spots).

Since it's New Year's Eve and you have youngish children, I would suggest the Whiteface Lodge. You can eat in the dining room or the bar area. They have a children's menu and I would say that even though it's on the high end, it's kid friendly (I have a 6 and 7 year old and have been numerous times). IMO the food to price ratio is not super fantastic, but depending on what you order, it can be very good and the atmosphere cannot be beat. You would need to make a reservation

Beyond the WFL, there are a few other good to very good restaurants, but I would not necessarily bring a large group with children.

If you want to go lower end, the Cottage is great for kids. It's totally casual and has an apres ski feel. The food is mostly sandwiches though and not too great. The service is decent and the staff quite nice. I hear that LIsa G's is also a great place if you want a burger or the like.

My experience with Nicola's on Main is that the food is mediocre but it may fit the bill as far as a larger party with children - serving pizza, pasta, salads. I recall that the interior is very large, dark and sparse (loud too), but seems very clean.

The High Peaks Resort (formerly the Hilton) underwent a big renovation recently, and has a couple restaurants that I have heard are decent. No first hand experience, but walked around over the summer and seemed to have decent atomosphere.

The Interlaken Inn is very good, but I don't think it would be good with more than a couple of well behaved children.

I can go on, but based on your post, IMO for New Year's Eve,your best bet is the Whiteface Lodge ( if you're not on too much of a budget).

Good luck and have fun in LP, its a great place to spend the New Year!

Caffe Azzurri in Hartsdale, NY

Why do I have to click on 5 different links to see the whole dinner menu?
This place can accommodate 100? The parking lot is very tiny. The 100 would have to come 5 to a car, unless there is other parking I'm not aware of.

Hope the food's good, it's walking distance from a friend's house and I will probably try it in the next week or so. The wines by the glass aren't anything special---and really, the best sparkling they could come up with is Martini and Rossi Asti Spumante? Ummm... Zachy's is 5 minutes away, any of their salespeople could put together a better list than this in a heartbeat. Seriously, if you're gonna call yourself a wine bar....
