Two nights in Buffalo

Two other local specialties. You've got to have a hot dog at Ted's. Charcoal grilled, Sahlens hot dogs. When you order it, tell them "burn it", order with everything (they have a unique chunky hot sauce that is not too spicy). Also, amazing onion rings, Loganberry to drink.

The other thing to try is sponge candy. Local specialty, available at all candy shops, but also very good from the world's best supermarket chain, Wegmans. Basically a caramelized sugar syrup (no dairy) taken to just near "burnt sugar", then a bit of baking soda is added which causes it to foam up before hardening. It's then coated in chocolate. The amazing thing about it is that, because the caramel is cooked so much, it loses much of it's sweetness, picks up a lot of complex flavor compounds. So it's very much an "adult" candy.

Hi FDR; liked it so much on Saturday for lunch before heading to Cappiello's, etc. went back again on Sunday for breakfast prior to the Farmers Market. Was disappointed that a dish we saw on Saturday that someone had for breakfast-the eggs in purgatory- would not be served on Sundays (breakfast only, but they don't consider that dish part of the regular breakfast menu). To answer your question-they questimate next week. Apparently the pizza will be totally different from what they sell next door- a thin crust pizza. Anxiously awaiting!

You and I seem the agree on our choices of most eateries. I used to go to Wheatfields occasionally, but their filthy silverware and bread plate really turned me off.

Moving to NJ - what town(s) have most interesting restaurants and food stores?

Indeed - As I get older, I think more of what my fixed expenses would be than about income taxes. Also about what amenities are in walking/public transport distance from home. Since we are homeowners here in NY the thought of pickup up 20,000+ in property taxes after a move to NJ (which will not end when my working years do) appals me. I wouldnt want to move anyplace that I wouldnt consider staying long term. I think overall NJ has some great eating and food shopping opportunities depending on where you are and whether you are willing to travel, quite excellent asian for example for a more upscale clientele than the NY chinatowns and little indias, middle eastern (Paterson) portuguese, cuban, etc. I truly wouldnt want to move there without a car however.

I was at Pearl East two Fridays ago at about 6 and it looked like Boca. Even my twelve year old laughed and said it reminded her of visiting her grandparents. When it comes to American-Chinese food of the 60's though, you can't beat Pearl East. As much as I love places like S&T, who doesn't grave a great General Tzo once in a while?

Moules et Frites, Syosset

Had dinner Saturday night at newly opened Moules et Frites in Syosset. It was generally quite good.

The room is about 1/3 bar -- appropriate considering the restaurant has dubbed itself a "Belgian Biergarten" -- though the music piped throughout the room can be somewhat intrusive. We weren't drinking, but there was a very good beer selection (not so much wine at this point).

Went with a family of 4 - the place is kid friendly and there were plenty of other children around. The menu features an extensive selection of Mussels as appetizers (with frites, $5 extra), as well as other French and Teutonic items.

We started off with a bowl of mussels with lardons and mushrooms in a cream sauce, as well as a leek and gruyere tart. The mussels were served in the traditional lidded copper pot, and were perfectly cooked. Just barely done - none overcooked or rubbery. They were not enormous mussels, but there were plenty of them and the flavor was fine. The fries were perfect, freshly made, REAL fries. None of that awful sprinkled on seasoning mix. Just pure fried potatoes. Served with tiny dishes of ketchup and mayo. Being Americans, though, we needed to ask for more ketchup. The leek tart was tasty, but it was heavy on the cheese. A bit more custard would have made a lighter appetizer.

For entrees, my daughter ordered the macaroni with 3 cheeses, my wife the bratwurst (they have a selection of sausages to choose from), my picky-eater son a cheeseburger. I ordered a wienerschnitzel. The bratwurst was a revelation for me, since I've only had supermarket brats and couldn't understand all the excitement -- they are so bland. This was very nicely spiced, but not in-your-face. Served in a split pretzel (nice touch) with red cabbage and potato salad. Not a German style vinegar based potato salad, but mayo/mustard/egg based. And terrific. The potatoes were not watery or undercooked, as is often the case, and the seasoning was spot on.

My son's cheeseburger looked fine -- he liked it. The mac and cheese was flavorful, but could have used more sauce. It was dryish on the inside, with a good layer of cheese on top. Needed to be more like a cheese-sauced gratin underneath. Not bad, but not great.

My wienerschnitzel was very nice - a very big slab of veal nicely breaded and fried, with a frisee salad and fried egg on top. The meat was far superior to the typical slice of processed tasting veal you get at a typical red-sauce Italian place. Accompanied by a gargantuan portion of the potato salad.

We were too stuffed for dessert.

We arrived early - around 6pm, and seated immediately. By the time we left, there was a line out the door.

I just went in there because it is one of those days where my office building has absolutely no heat. I now know that it is the special on Wednesday and Fridays. (But I forgot to notice the price). They didn't seem to have a printed menu to take away. However, this place looks good to me because it is not too fancy and you can sit alone without feeling weird. I guess I will have to try it soon as I have been jonesin for that type of thing lately.

Bronxville has several wine stores, but I wouldn't necessarily calll them great. The selection seems to be very poor overall in most Westchester wines stores. What they do have is probably decent, but since I don't generally want to spend $30-$50 on a bottle, I have trouble finding the "everyday" sort of wine.

Just wanted to extole the virtues on Natural one more time.

The butchering in this place is getting better and better. They really butcher. They get whole Murray's chickens from upstate and butcher daily. They get huge sides of beef and cut up their own cuts, like this amazing bone-in prime sirloin. Was on a diet for a while, but now I know, even the bread is great. Much from Tom Kat.

Very friendly and always helpful. Excellent, varied produce...organic, conventional, asian, etc. Great cheese section, good sushi, great beers.

Prepped food is great all the time. Head chef used to do catering at Fairway.

Still going to Fulton Fish market at 5AM for seafood.

Hope more and more people patronize this place. All the people I tell in town love it.

Plus, free delivery over $50.

Mexican or BBQ in NW New Jersey

I've been to Hot Rods in Wharton which is about 10 miles away from the 10.287 intersection. You could go straight up Route 10 or take I-80 West.

Hot Rod's is a small place with reasonable prices. Some really love the place. I found it to be fair to good on BBQ myself. If I were in the area, it would be worth considering, but I would not call it a destination for BBQ......however, in local newspapers it is always voted the best BBQ. Look at the site and decide for yourself.

FWIW, if I recall correctly, they have an all you can eat rib night.......call to verify the day.

Driving from Manhattan to Beacon - where to eat?

Stopping in Cold Spring is probably your best bet. It's about 10 minutes off the Taconic. In Cold Spring I'd recommend Le Bouchon or Cathryn's Tuscan Grill. Both are on Main Street in Cold Spring and about 10 minutes from Beacon. Here's my article on Le Bouchon.

http://hudsonvalleyfoodblog.com/lebouchon.html

In Garrison I'd recommend The Tavern at Highlands Country Club. I had dinner there on Saturday night and the food was very impressive. The Pork Confit was one of the best dishes I've had in the past 6 months. Also in Garrison is Valley Restaurant which is also exceptional but a little higher end. So take a look at the menu to see if it fits within your budget. Also double check that they serve lunch, I'm not sure if they do.

http://hudsonvalleyfoodblog.com/valleyrestaurant.html

My last recommendation is further south called the Peekskill Brewery. They brew their own beer and have very good food to go with it. Their menu includes a lot of small plates as well which could be perfect for lunch. I had dinner here on Friday night and the braised pork belly was delicious. It's also less then a minute off route 9.

Hope this helps.

My family ate a wonderful meal here this past weekend. I didn't see any reviews of the restaurant on chow or egullet, so I thought I'd write up a quick review. The food is very fresh. And cheap. You can order a
half dozen appitizers for 2-4 bucks a piece. The fish cakes, shrimp soup, and dumplings are all wonderful. The main courses are delishious as well. The owner/hostess is very charming and attentive, and it is a real treat.

This place is truely a foodie's dream restaurant. Cheap and delicious food in a nice setting.

I don't get out to Edison much, but I would expect the larger number of Indian restaurants there would keep Mogul on their toes. The Ming that I'm referring to (Morristown), Ming II, as I mentioned before, is horrible.

Should I ever run into a member of the Mehtani family, believe me, I will be giving them a large piece of my mind. As far as I'm concerned, London and Northern NJ have the best Indian restaurant food in the world (better than even India itself). When the best restaurant in NJ, possible even the whole planet, packs up, moves a block away and then proceeds to serve garbage, it's a sad sad sad sad day.

I'm sorry to keep harping on this, but the loss of Morristown Mogul weighs upon me terribly. I wish they would have just shut down for good, because Ming II is just an insult.

willett house cattle feed?

doe ayone know what they get fed? i had called them a couple days ago actually, and the man who answered couldn't tell me, and told me to call back when the chef gets back. so i just called now, and he said the chef doesnt know, nor do their purveyors. now, i rarely eat meat, let alone steak, but don't you think they should at least know what kind of feed their freakin cattle eat, esp when you're shelling out that kind of $$ (and in this day and age when (i hope) folks want to know mre about the food they may ingest)?! after that he said their fed grain, but almost seemed bothered at my asking. i then proceeded to ask about seafood specials, and i asked if they had any fish from the U.S., and he said he didn't know where their seafood came from either! i dunno, that just really bothers me. i will ask my waiter though, and see what he has to say.

Marisa's Trumbull, CT

Wife and I ate at Marisa's in Trumbull last night foir the first time in three years...........

We had stayed away since it had become a major watering hole and the dining experience had suffered. Now that a new sports bar oipened about a 5 minute drive away, they are not as jammed and we decided to give it a try.

We arrived at 7:30 on Saturday night and the parking lot was 80% full. We entered the dining room side and were seated immediately without reservations. Abou 60% of the tables were in use during our 3 hour stay. The bar side was hopping.

We started with a glass of the house Shiraz and were pleasantly surprised at the fine quality. Not sweet, and not bitter, the tannic acid level seemed low and it was fairly priced at $7 per glass on the menu, and $6.60 on the bill.

I ordered a side caesaer salad (a bargain at $3.00) and my wife ordered the homemade potato chips with gorgonzola cheese and bacon. The salad was very large buit overly chilled. I had to let it come to room temperature to eat. It had a nice house made dressing and non-greasy croutons.

The housemade potato chips were delicious. There was an ample amount of crumbled gorgonzola and loths of well done bacon pieces. It easillly could have been an appetizer for three ($10).

We did not feel like traditional Red sauce Itralain, nor any of their oversized meat portions.
There was a 'new' dinner special on the menu, the waitress said it only appeared 3 days ago, Paella for 2 for only $40.

It arrived in a cast iron Skillet. There was a bed of rice and peas topped with langostino, two lobeter claws, a plit tail, 3 jumbo shrimp, 4 large sea scallops, and 10 littleneck clams. The spicing was deliciopus. The lobster appeared to be a 1 lb size and it waqs cooked just right. The shell had been cracked in several places for easy eating. The clams were succulent as were the scallops. The langostinos really made the rice and peas stand out. The only disappointment was the shripm. They were jumbo and cooked perfectly with just the right texture. BUT, they had no flavor. They must have been farm raised, frozen and tasteless.
I would order this again, and hope Marisa's changes their sources of shrimp.

Service was excellent, the waitress and busboys were attentive, and what used to be an overly crowned and overpriced restaurant is not accessible and reasonable,

We're traveling from the Mid-Atlantic to Montreal on I-87 on Thanksgiving Day.
Posto 22 Italian in New Rochelle

A friend and I ate there last Saturday night. Mixed reviews. I'd go there again, but never on a Saturday night! So crowded and loud, it was really an unpleasant atmosphere - we couldn't talk at all without leaning in to each other's ear! We were both ordering pastas for our main courses, so tried the cold antipasti platter as an appetizer. Very nice! Very little lettuce - as most places usually fill the plate with - but a nice selection of dried sausages, ham, provolone, and mozzarella, with roasted red peppers and black olives. The olives were nothing special at all, seemingly right out of the can, but all other components were high quality and flavorful. The rolls and herb oil which accompanied it were nice & rustic (but needed salt, to my palate.) My friend loved his dinner: linguine with sweet sausage and broccoli rabe! Huge portion, and nicely garlic-y. I tried the "homemade" gnocchi, and asked for the bolognese sauce with it. The sauce was terrific: very reduced, creamy, and flavorful. But stay away from the gnocchi! These were absolutely leaden! I would have called these heavy even if I'd gotten them frozen from the grocery store, but to expect "homemade" tenderness and then receive these was a huge disappointment. My friend and I sort of reversed our opinions on dessert. He hated his "Italian cheesecake". He said just everything was wrong with it, from the graham cracker crust to the non-dairy tasting whipped topping. I chose chocolate mousse. It had wonderful chocolate flavor and there was a lot of it! Having said that, though - I wouldn't call it mousse. It was very dense - as if thickened with gelatin. Ordinarily, I'm one of those who can't get enough chocolate. I had to stop 1/2 way with this (well, maybe the gnocchi had something to do with that, too.) Other dinners going past us looked enticing & smelled great. We'll try it again someday and see if we can revise the 3-star rating, but this was our experience so far.

Stew Leonards...an ongoing debate

Thumbs up on Stew's Organic Chicken Stock! It made a mighty fine tortilla soup. I used Stew's chicken & spinach sausage instead of chicken in the soup and very much enjoyed the depth of flavor! Cheers to you, silent chickens!

Only thumbs down for me, I should've held out for Ugly tomatoes at Stop & Shop. Stew's herbicide-free hothouse tomatoes were horrible...but what was I expecting at this time of year? I will stick to Uglies from now on. My fault.

If your experience base is limited to Duff's and Anchor Bar, I can see the basis for your opinion. I concur with your opinion of Duff's but have often lamented the passing of the 'original' Anchor Bar - it used to be great. My own experience with them goes back to the original Frank and Teresa days and believe me, like all things, it changed.
Have you tried La Nova or Just Pizza? How about BarBill?
