Well I'd have to agree with E Eto after all. Nothing in your description really distinguishes the spot for me; if it were elsewhere, I wouldn't amble over. I intend on trying a taco, maybe more, next time its convenient. There are great Mexican spots in the Bronx, Chief points out one. Why should hounds based in other boroughs head here?

#1 soup has become a twice-weekly favorite, I'm ashamed to say, eaten in the parking lot behind the market. Doused with vinegar and chili sauce, there's nothing finer. Yesterday I ate the intestine (twice cooked, fried after ordering) and it too was sublime. Super fatty inside, crispy outside and barely seasoned, the ends went perfectly with and then into the soup. On another note, the fish + bamboo mentioned above was a nasty mess of flat fried dough medallions (the fish was nearly undetectable) covered in sugar and vinegar sauce, much like any sweet -and-sour. The bamboo offered partial relief with a pickle tang. Also, the beef stew was like a weak knockoff of the now-legendary #1 soup, only with big hunks of fat and gristle. #1 with a side of intestine is my choice so far -- see you there Fri!

Thanks for the tip on the fish. When I was in the Phillipines I had great fish cooked in banana leaf. I will try that for sure. Also good to know that they have white rice. I usually eat white rice with this type of food. I think i will talk to the chef next time and politely recommend that he add some desserts. My gf will be thrilled they have halo halo ( Filipina) but I am not a big fan of it.

Lake Pavilion, new Chinese in Flushing

Went to Lake Pavilion on Mother's Day. The parking lot was full and the restaurant as well (they do take reservations though). We arrived before 6:30PM and waited over an hour to be seated.

The restaurant is spacious, clean and bright with windows all along the side. Service is quick and efficient, our tea was checked throughout the meal and replenished accordingly.

We ordered the mixed mushroom dish, lobster with shrimp, sauteed dao miao, lamb chops with onion and peppers, sweet and sour pork. corn soup.

All dishes were handled with a deft hand, we requested that the dishes be prepared "less salt, sugar, oil" and they complied with excellently prepared food that was indeed light and respectful of our request.

The mixed mushroom dish was flavorful and the sauce light and full of wonderful aroma, the lobster was tender, perfectly cooked and generously portioned. The shrimp was likewise cooked with delicacy. The lamb chops were caramelized and juicy. The dao miao was a tad overcooked but light, and fresh. The corn soup was competent but not meriting mention. The least popular dish was the sweet and sour pork which was well prepared but had a milk flavor that was not well received.

This is a first, I called the waiter over and ordered Peking duck. The waiter looked at our dishes and said that Peking duck doesn't do well as take out. I said that we wouldn't be doing take out, we were going to eat it there. He paused, looked at us and said, "No, you wouldn't be able to finish it" and walked away. We looked at each other shocked but we all had a laugh.

All in all my favorite Cantonese restaurant in Flushing and well worth many a return trip. A great recommendation by CHers and many more dishes to try. The braised duck tongues, lobster salad and crispy skin chicken look particularly delicious.

Tres Leches Cake -- Sunset Park or other Brooklyn

If you take the R/M 15 minutes out of Manhattan to the Steinway station in Astoria, Queens. Villa Brazil Cafe has a great brazilian version, with a hint of coconut. The cake is light, soft, and soaked in tres leches, and the frosting is not heavy and compliments the cake well. They sell out very quickly, I would try to go early or call ahead. Their passion fruit cake is very good also.

Considering that there's many Colombian restaurants and bakeries in the area, I've found that this Brazilian place has the best tres leches. Their hanger steak from the back window is delicious also.

I've only been to Smorgasburg once, it was later in the afternoon and so there weren't long lines. Some of the vendors were winding down. The view was nice. But my biggest reaction was the actual setting... a gravel-filled lot where dust was blowing around everywhere. Why would anybody think that was an appealing setting to prepare (or consume) food?

I'm trying to convince my family that Nancy's brand organic cottage cheese is a thousand times better than the Breakstone's kind you typically buy in grocery stores, but if I bring the stuff from a grocery store in my neighborhood I'm afraid it may be worse for the wear afterthe journey over. Where in Prospect Heights can I find the stuff? Already checked at the Met on Vanderbilt near Prospect Pl, no luck, but somewhere near the 7th ave stop would be ideal.

Taqueria Coatzingo (76th st.)- Lengua en Salsa Verde

A year, maybe more, had past since I made it back to TC. But it's been at least a couple of years since I ordered the lengua (al vapor) en salsa verde. I went back and ordered it the other night and I don't know why I let the time slip like that because this is easily their best dish. The tongue at TC is long-steamed and perfectly soft, succulent, and flavorful. The meat is as fatty and loose as well-braised brisket, but more porous then stringy. You could easily fool someone that this was not tongue if you wanted to though. The half medallion chunks of meat are swimming in salsa verde. I'm crazy for this green sauce, which tastes fresh, herbal, and pleasantly savory- much less tangy than other versions. It's a nice, almost decadent compliment to the lengua. As a plato for about $13, it's all served crammed on a dish with a scoop of guacamole, rice, refried beans, a wedge of white cheese, and a roll of tortillas to sop things up. Perfection. Already thinking about going back again soon.

Pies 'n' Thighs recs?

Went here yesterday evening, and sat in the back room with side open to the street on a really nice day. However while this is my first visit, overall impression is of average; perhaps our expectations were off?

Chicken from the box menu was moist, tender, and hot, but the crust/skin though seasoned well and tasty nothing memorable, outstanding, or unique. We also had a catfish box with crust bit on a soggy side and the fish did not have that bit of a bite and flakiness retained when fried while it is in good quality/fresh. But all in all the major players were okay and disappointing given the raves here by many as it is a satisfying feeling when both us agree that we couldn't have made this at home.

What I didn't like: very plain and not-so-fresh iceberg lettuce salad, and grind up (coarse espresso) warm coleslaw that did very little to refresh our palates between fatty bites. Their hot sauce has flavor of vinegared-down buffalo wing sauce, and bbq sauce again quite forgettable; I think sides and condiments do add much to a joint/dish like this, and I didn't get a sense that they are paying much attention to them from what we got to sample. A half price draft beers did clease our palates and mood though, and certainly our friendly server who packed the banana cream pie to go (and they were decent).

Dimas European Bakery in Rego Park?

Hi George, we lived down the street from the bakery for many years, and once you sold it, it went downhill pretty quickly. We moved out of that area about 7 years ago, but it hasn't been a bakery for a long time. We used to enjoy your pastries quite a bit, especially the ones with rum! There aren't too many Romanian style bakeries around like that anymore...glad to hear your're well, former neighbors and customers!

Sunnyside Pizza-EXCELLENT!!

Jakes, I think the place you're referring to (corner of 39th Ave. and 51st, though, not Skillman/52nd) is Donato's, which is our go-to place for pizza in Sunnyside. They have a full Italian menu in addition to pizza and outdoor seating in the summer.

We live closer to Lentini's and used to order from there as well, but we prefer Donato's. I'm a cheese addict so we always order extra cheese, but I would give their regular cheese a try and see what you think. I will say that I have been disappointed with their vegetable toppings - they're pretty skimpy - but we generally order pepperoni and they use enough to suit me there.

We also used to order from Woodside Pizza, which I thought was pretty good, but I haven't had pizza from there in years so I don't know if it has fallen off. I'll have to give Sunnyside Pizza a try.

what's good and child friendly in long island city for dinner?

Tournesol is lovely and child friendly, they will do dishes for children if you tell them what your child likes to eat.

John Brown is excellent for BBQ, the decor is wanting, but at least you can relax in such a casual atmosphere.

Manducatis Rustica is very lively and often has children, the service is very slow but it's child friendly with many desserts and pastries... and pizza.

Similarly Manetta's often has children, has better service than Manducatis Rustica and excellent Italian pastries. You can't go wrong with either, but do make a reservation! Sometimes Manetta's gets packed and wait times can be long.

If you're driving, you might want to consider Salt and Fat in Sunnyside, bacon popcorn is a hit with kids, sliders and other kid friendly dishes as well.

Szechuan Gourmet/Flushing vs. Hunan Kitchen Grand Sichuan/Flushing

Hunan Kitchen does not focus on Sichuan dishes. You would be better off going to Spicy Tasty for Szechuan flavors. Hunan Kitchen is however, an excellent restaurant. You should consider Hunan House as well, which is fantastic, seats more people and has received less recognition than HKGS but is equally impressive.

Max Bratwurst un Bier - New German place in Astoria

Beer is good traditional German favorites. The sausage, which I had to send back once due to undercooking, was so so. But it is new and clearly they need time to work things out. I'd like to try some of their other plates.
It's a small place, but works well since there's a lot of light with the fold out windows opened. It's mostly communal seating, which is nice, too. The umpa-music is not to loud and there is a soccer game on the not too big tv.
Your Hub will love it.

Sunnyside: The Dog and Duck and Bliss 46 Bistro

Been in the neighborhood a while, new member to chowhound.

P.J. Horgan's used to have good fish and chips, but they've been sliding to average to below average lately.

P J Horgan Tavern
4217 Queens Blvd, Sunnyside, NY 11104

I've been to Dog and Duck, Quant, Bliss 46. Dog and Duck wasn't that bad regarding food, but the design is horrible. Bad table layout, and the banquets by the windows are sure to cut the circulation off in your legs. No vestibule, so tables next to the door freeze.

Had the hangar steak, leek and ham pie, bar food burger (was the best of the menu) and the duck. Yeah, fries are bagged. Service was average. Compared to the what's available in the neighborhood, I can't complain that much. This ain't Manhattan. It took long enough to get herbs at the food markets and a farmers market at 42nd and skillman so any kind of halfway decent restaurant that isn't a rice and beans joint or bad pizza I'll take. Hell, there's only one place to get a good bagel in what, a 3 square mile radius of my apt.

I'll have to try molly blooms. Didn't know they served food.

Looking for a cafe WITHOUT wifi in Brooklyn, circa Prospect Heights/Park Slope

I'm looking for a cafe to do work (on my laptop) that does not have internet. I've recently become freelance, and working at home with a wifi connection makes me feel like an alcoholic with a full bar. I need some focused internet-free time to get actual work done. Are there any recommendations for a place in downtown/park slope Brooklyn where I can work on a computer that does not have wifi? Thank you!

Uncle Zhou 大河人家 Elmhurst

Thanks for the recommendation of the cumin fried lamb. Got it last night and it was the big hit. I've had I think Szechuan versions of this that are much drier, with smaller bits of lamb, the size and texture of clam strips. This was slices of lamb and very tender, more like it was just quickly stir fried or maybe even cooked in liquid. Fantastic.

The crispy rabbit is covered in Szechuan peppercorns and dried peppers. The little bones may annoy some people, but it was tasty to snack on, shared with a group.

The rest was usual great stuff-- the bok choy and mushrooms, lamb dumplings, spicy beef knife shaved noodles. Stuffed four people for about $50 total, plus beers from the corner store across the street-- which store, I noticed, sells fresh rabbit and duck as well as fresh chicken in about 7 or 8 varieties that I didn't understand.

Definitely restored my faith in Uncle Zhou after a so-so ma po tofu last time. And Zhou himself was as hospitable as ever.

http://newyork.grubstreet.com/2012/04/julie-powell-to-cocreate-menu-for-lounge-47.html

Lounge 47 recently updated their menu and I stopped by for dinner. The restaurant was very quiet, a little too dimly lit for my taste.

Pork belly sliders (serving size of two) were served in Chinese bao with pickled vegetables and sriracha mayo. Very tasty and the flavors well composed but the bao were generic supermarket variety and really need to have a fresh steaming.

Shrimp with watercress and coriander had 8 medium sized shrimp crusted with herbs, over a bed of watercress salad and grapefruit. What I liked was the watercress was not overdressed or salty and the grapefruit was not overly sweet. The shrimp were room temp and could have been hotter.

Their burger was competently prepared, medium rare was medium rare and the fries thin and crispy but seemed to be the frozen variety.

Still many things on the menu to try and all and all, would go back.

Anybody been to Boat House (Cajun seafood) in Brooklyn?

Wanted to report my on my experience. Finally did get out there and ordered some lobster, shrimp and clams in the rajun cajun sauce along with some fries. Cooking was a bit uneven -- shrimp was a bit overcooked and the lobster tail was a bit under. But it was still fine. Rajun cajun sauce is different than Boiling Crab -- less butter and less of a rounded taste. I prefer the sauce at Boiling Crab. I'll probably try to order a mix of different sauces next time as they also offer lemon pepper, garlic butter and the "whole sha-bang!" which is a mixture of rajun cajun, lemon pepper and garlic butter mixed together. Their "cajun fries" are just plain shoestrings. The one at Boiling Crab is coated with a cajun spice mix. I actually prefer plain fries as I think they're a better foil for the boiled seafood.

Service is well-intentioned but a little bit green. The girls they hire are very young and inexperienced. It was a bit difficult getting my order across because of the language barrier. But they do mean well, especially as I was asked over 10 times (not exaggerating) if I wanted my water refilled. The water came in an opaque soda fast food style cup so the waitresses could not see when it was gone. Note to soda lovers -- they have a $2 cup with unlimited refills.

It was pretty empty when I was there as well. Hope they stick around for a while as this type of restaurant isn't common in NYC. It may be hard to draw many people as the nearest subway station is about 1/2 mile away.
