Lings Kitchen - Fords, NJ

I've went back to Lings for about two times a week since they've opened and i have to say that i do not taste that much of a difference. Sure, there is a smidge of difference but i have to say it's still the best chinese food around. I've talked to the girl in the front and although it is "under new management", they have managed to keep it in the family. The people running the place are extremely friendly and they always remember my name as soon as i walk into the door and they know exactly what i always order. My son is a particularly picky person and he wouldn't eat particular veggies and they were willing to customize everything to the way i want it. i guess it's up to personal taste because i see a few people who do not like their food anymore but hey, i am one customer that their amazing service and good food has kept.

Pizza in Monmouth County

Now. I now know that you know what you're talking about (see our Thai exchange/Manows)..

Vesuvios remains theeeeeeeeeee best pizza eating that one can find here in Monmouth County. I've said it for years and all that you hear down here is "Carmen's (i.e. Pete & Elda's which is so damned pedestrian and 'weak', I don't even want to further comment on this spot)

But back to Vesuvios: Service sucks, you get treated like $#!t if you're not a regular. The women in their pompodour 50's cuts are just way over the top, and the interior decor as you cite, the aqua naugahyde and plastic flowers sort of makes this dining experience a cross between 'Blue Velvet and the best damned pizza experience one is likely to find.

When we took a friend last year to V's, he commented that it was the best pizza he had tasted since leaving Brooklyn some 15 years earlier.

So much for Manow's tonite

Nan appears to be French Thai fusion, which is no different than Origin (the original spot) in Somerville, which also serves excellent fusion dishes. And while folks give me heat when I mention Origin (the purists), Origin remains one fine Thai restaurant.

I had a favorite that a friend from So. Jersey would take me to, (right across the street from the Civic Center) which is now gone, some 10 years. It was one of the best Thai restaurants that I've ever had the pleasure of dining at.

Some favorites of mine: Pam Real Thai on the west side of Manhattan remains 'my go to' which I can easily reach in less than an hour.

In SF, try Marnee Thai, in the Inner Sunset neighborhood. Love this place and we do always find the time to dine there, especially when we visit GGP, as it's but a 2 block walk south on 9th St. In Seattle (we will again visit next summer), try Mim Thai which I believe is still in operation and also a terrific restaurant.

Here in NJ, my standby is 4 Seasons on Stelton Rd. Authentic Thai that is but 10 minutes from my office. And really quite good. Roast pork in black pepper sauce. Just thinking of this dish tells me, I'm there this coming week.

El Sham - middle eastern - Hamilton (Mercer Co) NJ

I answered my own question by eating at El Sham last night with my wife and friend. It is definitely not on par with Marhaba or Ibby's. In fact, it was all in all a pretty lousy meal. I say that for two reasons:

Food: We ordered hummus, baba ghannouj, stuffed grape leaves, tabbouleh, falafel, and chicken shawarma. The hummus and baba ghannouj were fine, but honestly not much different than what I could buy at a grocery store. The grape leaves came out of a can. The tabbouleh was different, and not as good, as what I've eaten at other restaurants -- it was more of a pasta dish and less of a salad of parsley, etc. The falafel was pretty good. The chicken shawarma was terrible -- dry, overcooked, bland.

Value: This is not a fancy restaurant and that's fine. You order at the counter, the food is served on styrofoam plates, and there's little to no ambiance. All of that does not bother me in the least. However, the prices they charge are more expensive than places with waiter service, linens, ambiance, etc. The combo plates were $15 and we got some lousy chicken shawarma and two sides (hummus, tabbouleh, etc.). The sides were tiny. To charge fifteen bucks for that is highway robbery. I'm not usually the guy that complains about value at restaurants -- it's a tough business to make a nickel, so I'm usually content to pay a bit extra to keep a good restaurant in business -- but this was over the top.

I don't think we'll give this a second chance. We've got Marhaba and Ibby's close enough and if we're looking for great middle eastern food, we can head up to Patterson (as we did today, in a desperate attempt to erase bad memories of subpar baba ghannouj).

I asked for no peppers, but when I got home, there were peppers. I'll try the hot dog next time. I had a hot dog from Hot Dog Bob's in Keyport yesterday, so I just wanted to check out Uncle Philly's sausage. At least now with Uncle Philly's if I want an IHD for dinner, I can get one, since they're open till 9:30.

Five Guys fries suffer from the same issues that plague any place that tries to depend on fresh cut potatoes. There are so many variables like the age of the potatoes, time of year they were harvested, starch and water content, humidity, day of the week, emotional issues of those cutting and cooking, etc, etc, etc...

The last couple times I've been there the fries came out crispy and hot, but within 2 or 3 minutes degenerated to the point where they could literally be tied in knots with out them breaking.

Bakery in eastern PA that makes Apple Bread?

There is a roadside produce store on Route 70 in New Jersey, Red Top, that sells the most delicious Apple bread. I know they don't bake it themselves, and understand they buy the bread from a bakery somewhere in Pennsylvania. Does anyone have any idea as to where this bread comes from? The bread is a a heavy bread with cinnamon and chucks of apple in it, and a white sugar glaze on the crust.

I'm very happy to report that I jumped to a conclusion, I stopped by last night and they were open.

Wang Sushi is indeed open seven days a week (according both the website and the door sign), what happened on Wednesday was a traffic debacle that kept a number of people from getting there to open the restaurant. I was there at 5:30, and they didn't open until around 6:00 because there was nobody to open!

The sushi to go that I ordered was absolutely perfect, as always!

I can only say I was there for drinks. I thought that was overpriced, too!! Little did I know, the wine I tasted and liked was $ 12.00 a glass. out of 6 of us, we each had 2 glasses. $144.00..can you beleive that!! What a watse of money.

I know, I probably should have asked how much first, but with the look of the place inside, I thought nothing would be over 8 or 9 dollars.

The menu was so week, and the dinners we saw coming out of the kitchen looked about the same as that diner down the street.

Sorry I can't be more of help on the food, but I just get so mad when I think what we spent on an ok (probably $ 20) bottile of wine.

Funny to see this on here as Wrightstown is not exactly somewhere most people would like to visit! But being stationed at McGuire, we frequent Sebastian's quite often for lunch, and they always have good lunch specials as well. I cannot say that I am well versed on German food, but I have yet to be disappointed there. Friends who were stationed in Germany said that the food is every bit as good as the food in Germany, but who really knows for sure. Might have to stop in towards the end of the week since it's been a while. -mJ

How can you leave out the Griggstown pot pie. It has been written up in many newpapers and magazines as the best. I totaly agree with your comments on all the other items. I joined their CSA this summer and loved all the fresh veggies I was able to get. I picked them up on Thursday so I was to take advantage of their Thursday to Saturday lunches at the farm.

25 Burgers Now Open Bound Brook NJ

I go to 25 on a fairly regular basis these days, at least 2-3 times a month, and they have never let me down. The quality of the burgers trumps that of places like Five Guys, they're always really creative with their 'burger of the month', and you'd be hard pressed to find a better bang for your buck.

Burgers I recommend include the chili burger, the pot roast burger, and the maui burger, all of which are absolutely delicious.

RiverWinds in West Deptford - anyone been yet?

Looking for any thoughts on the newly opened RiverWinds Restaurant in West Deptford. We're looking for a new place for our office holiday luncheon, but it's been hard to get decent info on the place yet -- the website menus don't list prices, and some folks have been complaining how expensive it is, but not much said on if the food justifies the prices. Also, is there a dresscode being enforced? I heard from one person she almost wasn't let in for wearing sneakers...

Sambo's Tavern (Leipsic, Delaware)

More than twenty-five years after my previous visit, I had the opportunity recently to return to Delaware's finest crab shack: Sambo's Tavern in Leipsic, Delaware, just outside of Dover.

A humble tavern overlooking the bay, Sambo's has been a fixture in Leipsic for several decades.
Comprised of two rooms: enter the bar area, with a handful of tables or walk to the main dining room with perhaps two dozen tables and a view of the bay.

The menu is comprised of a variety of bar foods, including pizza, salads and fries. But the real draw, and the only reason to visit, besides the friendly waitresses, are the crabs. Harvested from waters 9 miles off the coast of Delaware (it is illegal, I learned, to crab in the bay) and sold by the dozen ($25), eaten by hand on newspaper-draped tables using a mallet, a knife and brute force.
Sambo's is open from April to November only. There is seasonal variation in the size and quality of the crabs served. In late October, crabs ran about a half-pound each and were juicy and tasty, coated in salt, seasonings and, dare I say, a bit of sand. Wash them down with a pitcher of beer
(my preference, PBR, by the can). Service is cheerful and the dining room is a mixture of local regulars and a smattering of tourists, like me. I understand that during NASCAR season at nearby Dover Downs, the crowds can be thick.

Reservations are accepted. Web site? Not Sambo's. They still do things the old-fashioned way.

Arrive in Leipsic a bit early? Be sure to spend a few hours at the Bombay Hook Federal Wildlife Refuge nearby (http://www.fws.gov/northeast/bombayhook/), where you can see a variety of beautiful migratory and wading birds in a salt marsh created for the purpose.

We were also there on Sat. night. My husband also ordered the lamb stew. He enjoyed it. I had the tuna entree, which was good, just a bit on the salty side. They have a few kinks to work out, but overall a good addition to Monmouth County area.
