Enough bars to suffice.. Good Foodd is harder to find.with that many people Nakama might be large enoug to accomodate... Possible Pittsburgh Steakhouse ( not the best but works)... Mallorca isn't too bad.. , not my fave , but solid choice.

Piper's is a awesome choice... ( my fault for neglecting it) Bar can get croweded, great bar tenders always up on what that have.. ..

Gandy Dancer is awesome --very board walk empire -ish. (ok might regret this dorky statemnet, but great date place none the less)

Mallorca is not one of my fav's. People love i just think its ok. I spent a TON of money there and left kind of disapointed.

Cure VS. Union Pig

I would highly recommend a visit to Cure. Only ate there once, with another couple, and it was a fantastic meal. Service was excellent. Wonderful atmosphere. And everything we ate was very good to excellent. I've eaten at Salt twice and while it was mostly enjoyable both times, the only thing that might take me there instead of Cure is the ability to get cocktails/beer. In any case, get yourself to Cure and see for yourself. I suspect you won't be disappointed.

The area is beautiful...Across the street is Mirror Lake.(Ithink a camp site)... The area in general is VERY well kept, not back woods middle of no where, like retired doctor middle of nowhere. I believe the owners a PHD for PITT, during the week.

I've also have a business card with a guy who sells them. Homemade Pierogies 856-495-6415

Driving from Nyc to Pittsburgh

In Shartlesville, about midway between Allentown and Harrisburg, you can try the Shartlesville Inn. It's PA Dutch food, served family style. Not gourmet by any means, but decent. And if you have an hour to kill, stop in at Roadside America a half mile up the road. Pure tourist trap, but fun, even for the adults.

(Oops, I see I'm too late. Well, try it the next time.)

I do miss Surfside but I am no longer wanting for good places to eat. I am going to try some places in the downtown area that are supposed to have great burgers and onion rings and crawfish cakes. The chef is New Orleans trained. If it is good we could meet there someday.
I did read on here that somebody skipped frying the meat but it wasn't me. I may try it though. I have a friend who puts her meatballs in the sauce raw, and everyone loves em. Have a great summer as well! P.S. Having lamb for Mother's Day.

I really like Toast, and my most recent visit within the past month was very good so I would still recommend it. That said, it's pretty pricey. There are so many other great new choices in Pittsburgh now, where you can get the same quality (or better) food at a better price, that I'd be temped to try something new.

Finally made it to Sphinx of PA. Falafel was very good. Had it in a sandwich. However the highlights of the meal were the lamb mixed grill and the basbousa. We also tried the konafa. I would definitely go back. The women behind the counter were helpful with recommendations. Falafel better than the Cedar Restaurant. Prices very reasonable.

kid-friendly weekday lunch in Pittsburgh (& a dinner)

Mad Mex is fun, sorta quasi-Mexican-inspired, works great with a kid typically. It's a chain but a local one, and that's the original location. Be aware that walk is uphill somewhat significantly if I remember right. ;-) http://madmex.com/

Spice Island Tea House is a sort of hole in the wall ethnic place: http://www.spiceislandteahouse.com/Homepage.html I've been there just once but liked the food. Could probably still walk here, it's also on Atwood.

You'd probably want to drive to The Porch. Might be worth it though if you want a little bit nicer dinner. I haven't been. http://www.ThePorchAtSchenley.com/

Of course if you're going to drive you could choose some other places too. You could still go to the Church Brew Works if that appealed before, it's not really that far. http://churchbrew.com/

Thanks for the tip, Markcron, but we're now in Troy, NY.

We're supposed to go to Rutland today, where I was sure to find ramps. However, a contact I had there tells me they won't have any for another week or so, because they pick the ramps "at a higher elevation".

I think we may head a bit further South and look for ramps there.

Don't have much time to keep the board posted as to where we're going and I will put in more details when we get home this weekend. Suffice it to say that so far we've eaten ramps in Bradford, PA, at the Mason-Dixon Ramp Festival and in Elkins, WV. I hope we won't be disappointed by Vermont.

Looking for a great Caterer in Pittsburg? I found one!

Café Raymond – I am fan of his café in the Strip District. I was excited to learn from a friend that she hired him to cater her cocktail party at her home for about 30 people. Ray was our chef and he had a few assistance/servers. Food was prepared beautifully and served professionally.
You can't beat the quality of the food, the professionalism of the staff and you can't find a better catering coordinator than Ray for the price! If I ever do parties for catering, Ray will be my first choice every single time. It was that amazing. This is like coming in with no idea what kind of catering to expect and being completely blown away by the actual service presented.
I'm sold.

Thanks for all the great information, Lisa!

I am trying just to be as healthy as possible and to direct my family in this way, too! As far as becoming vegan, I am not even close to that! I am still consuming eggs, milk, and chicken on a limited basis. I have managed to cut out red meat and pork, so I am making progress. I am happy to do my best to reduce my Carbon footprint!

I am starting to plant my garden this weekend, so maybe I will be able to grow enough produce for my family so that I do not have to depend on any other sources...LOL...I wish!!!

Well, keep me posted if you come upon any interesting info! I appreciate your guidance!

For my potential history of Erie, Pa Eateries book: I'm looking for information and hopefully photos of Erie's early Pizza shops. In particular DiMichaels Pizza which was located in the area I grew up. Please help me in you can. Other shops, info is also needed.

Thank You

Thanks very much for your suggestions. I will remember Judy's for next year. Specifically, well I would have been open to any place in the city or burbs that is not a chain operation and offers what could be considered a pleasant venue, good friendly service with very good food, of any type! Thanks again I will log your choices.

It is 2 doors down from Nicholas Coffee in Market Square.

I have had a steady diet for lunch of the sausage and chipped beef.

Same owner -- same menu --- same great taste.

Do you want a sit down restaurant or a bakery/take out place? Enrico's in the Strip District is hard to beat (no chocolate cake but excellent brownies if you need chocolate), Oakmont Bakery gets great reviews too.

In all honestly, hands down the best place I've ever been to in all of my travels is right here in Pgh, Food Glorious Food, in Highland Park.

Pig Roast Caterer in the Poconos?

Hey! We are going with Barley Creek Brewing because they can do the bar/passed hors d'oevres/sides etc that are more than the typical potato salad, cole slaw type.
We had a tasting over there and the mac and cheese was really good, everything else was pretty typical catered food. Oh and they also know our venue and will bring the roaster there, which I really wanted.
Good luck!

Need PA-centric foods for my new book

The "associated with" modifier as noted more correctly defines most of the plethora of suggestions offered here. I am a bit surprised that you list "hot dogs" with meat sauce and fish sandwiches? Chow Chow is something I have associated with Pennsylvania and while pretzels ( not just soft) can be found world wide in some form, PA was and perhaps is the Pretzel Capital of the states.

I'm happy (because my mom loved this food so much) to be able to post two places that haven't been mentioned yet. Shady Maple on Rt. 23 southeast of Reading, and Deitsh Eck. The former is like a gigantic PA Dutch Borg buffet, it will take you in and assimilate you, and the latter is like it's in your grandmother's house. Only the food is even better. >:)
