We have been eating at Colao's for 5 years and we have never been disappointed. We come to Erie on business several times a year and make a point of always eating at Colao's. The veal is as good as anywhere we have found.

Philadelphia Winter Harvest Members?

I figure there must be a few of you out there. I love Winter Harvest, but there are so many products I wonder about. I thought it might be fun to start a thread about what things you've tried that you love, or that you wouldn't order again. I'm particularly curious about the various preserved/pickled items, various sausages, and prepared foods.

I usually just stick to pretty simple things--love the hammon sweet potatoes, the yogurt, gold rush apples, and some basic cuts of meat. My son is addicted to Margerum's sour cherry jelly.

So, what's your experience? I'm looking forward to more ideas about what to order.

Best Restaurant in Erie, PA

We just ate at 1201 Kitchen tonight and think this is now the best restaurant in Erie. The creativity and quality of food is incredible. This restaurant would stand up to its peer in any city in the US. Chef Kern's take on asian fusion cuisine is amazing. Try the roasted romaine or the warm arugula salad. The squash potstickers and fried oysters are excellent and the pumpkin spice creme brulee is like nothing you have ever eaten in your life.

Just wanted to let everyone know what an incredible place this is. We're from North Carolina and I was determined to find great Italian in Philadelphia b/c the pickings are thin locally. No reservations hurt some since we have a 3 year-old and we did not arrive until 5:50. We waited about 40 minutes a Saturday night. We were also not prepared for the BYO wine. Of course this was all our fault.

However, the food, service and price could not be better. Actually, I thought I would be paying twice as much before I left. Bucatini and Paccheri were incredible. Octopus special and whole fish were sublime. I thought the Fagliolata was also very good. Just got back from SF and had a great time but this was just as good but much less expensive.

Also ate at SideCar for brunch. Another great experience. chicken and waffles, Challah French Toast, crab omelet, and bloody mary's were something to write home about.

We like Girasole in Shadyside for Italian. Although it's had it's detractors of late. Not typical

Brauhauss Schmitz: Philly

I ate there last night. I'm in no great rush to go back. I thought the prices were a bit too high for that type of place. I had the goulash soup which was just odd. It had some very pronounced seasonings that overwhelmed the dish. My husband had the Goulash over spaetzle and I preferred his dish. It was more balanced. i also had the smoked trout salad which was just ok. It was loaded with smoked trout, but the salad itself needed some zing.

We got there aroung 6:30 and it was busy, but not overly noisy. I know some have complained about the noise, so perhaps an early dinner is a better option here.

Just returned from Philly and had a wonderful time! Really loved the city! We were busy with conference activities, but got to have some great meals/drinks while in town. The first night, we went to Tria at Rittenhouse.....it was perfect. Great food, amazing cheese, and interesting beer/wine selection. It was packed, but we had a seat in only about ten minutes. We also tried Village Whiskey and had the $25+ burger with foie gras--amazing!--as well as some snacks, including fries, cheese puffs, pretzels. Yum! Fantastic whiskey selection as well, and loved the atmosphere. Terminal market was so close and perfect for breakfast/lunch. We went to the crepe place for breakfast one day and the Dutch Eating Place for lunch (had turkey melt special--soo good!), and I bought some fudge today before we left...from Sweet as Fudge Candy Shop. Literally the best fudge I've had in years. I've already gone to their website to see if I could buy more online, but no luck :(. We also took a late night trip to Pats (had to do it!!) which was fun. FWIW, I didn't think the cheesesteak was all that special, but a cool experience nonetheless...

I'm happy to say that I only ate one meal in the hotel, which makes me very happy. I really do appreciate everyone's insight and help re: places to go/eat in Philly. Chowhound makes visiting new cities so much more tasty! :) Let me know if you come to Norfolk/Va Beach/Hampton roads! Thanks again...and I can't wait to come back!

Best Sushi in the Philly Burbs

Living in North Wales, I've been to the following local sushi joints:

Cho Cho's
Eastern Dragon
Sushikazu
Fuji
Minado
Blue Fin
Miraku
Lai Lai Gardens
Joa
Spamps
Umai

Fortunately for me, the closest is, hands down, the best: Umai. I ate there when they first opened and was immediately impressed. I have been back no fewer than 10 times and every single time is nothing less than amazing. While their rolls are great and they have some original ones, for me where they really shine is in their sashimi. Always fresh, always great texture and flavor, and great variety. Not to mention that they know how to prepare and present it perfectly. It has become the standard by which I judge all other sushi joints. Oh and the complimentary kale juice is always an appreciated gesture. Going tonight actually...

While you may be confusing the name of the place with a certain throat lozenge, The Fisherman Restaurant in Phoenixville is as old school as it gets, and I love it. Totally dig their croquettes and authentic old school vibe, and hope they never change it. I always preferred their diner type food to the Vale Rio, but be prepped, it's pretty plain American food, nothing fancy.
Here's a link to a piece I wrote about it for my website Retro Roadmap - I think the fact that I entitled it "My Fave Restaurant In Town" tells you something!

Help getting to Brauhaus Schmitz on South Street

um, yeah, don't do that. finding a spot at whole foods is a pain if you are actually shopping there and people leaving their cars there = schmucks.

i grew up and live 2 blocks south of 7th and south so i do have a few good recommendations for parking.

1. be prepared to walk. NEVER in my 14 years of driving has it taken me 30 minutes to find a spot in my neighborhood. you just have to be creative and not expect to park within a block of your destination.

2. so, where to park - head south on 8th or 10th (not 6th, too many non-locals loop between 6th and front) and weave up and down the streets between bainbridge and christian. you may have to go a little south of christian, but this is still less than a ten minute walk from brauhaus. beware of 2 hour parking signs though.

3. there are a few free municipal lots in the area, one at 7th and fitzwater, on christian between 7th and 8th and around 7th and carpenter (just south of christian). free = yay!

4. as for pay lots, the ones on delaware are definitely good and you get to walk up all of south street, which is nice. there are also a few lots on south street, though i am sure they are spensivo. there is one on lombard between 2nd and 3rd as well and you can enter a south st one on bainbridge (between 4th and 3rd?).

5. take a bus or a taxi from another part of town. if you want to park in center city (if you're more familiar with it), taxis are always a safe bet....

good luck! that place has some damn good stuff......

Best Hot Dogs In Montgomery County PA?

I tried the Philly Hot Dog Cafe for lunch today. The rolls are very good, the pickles on the Vienna were great (like the ones you get on Easton Style dogs). The chili sauce was very basic (probably straight of a can with chili powder added). I agree with the observation that the dogs would be better if grilled. They have a nice griddle and the casing on their dogs would be crispy instead of soggy.

Its a nice place but if I am in that area, I will head to Speck's instead.

Harrisburg/Hershey Thanksgiving Dinner

I live in Hershey and would reccoment Houlihan's (also owned by Hershey Entertainment) on Chocolate Ave. and Park Ave. If Hershey Pantry is open while you are here, be sure to try it! They have the best breakfasts ever! They are on Chocolate Ave going towards Palmyra. Hotel Hershey is too overpriced and no one local goes there! Everything else is chains like Bob Evans, Red Robin, Fuddruckers, and Applebees...not really holiday fare, but still good food.

Gimaro Seafood & Steak, Montgomeryville PA

I was just there and I think we were at two different restaurants!

My husband and I went to Gimaro's last night and it was AWFUL! I didnt mind that it still looked like Bennigans...it was no secret that that's what it used to be. We were seated quickly...it wasnt busy at all. We ordered drinks and then our appetizer came...the southwest sampler...the eggrolls were ok (hard to mess up a frozen eggroll!) but the nachos and the quesadillas were disgusting! They put the lettuce and tomato inside the quesadilla so they were all hot and slimy....but worse than that the cheese or something in it was definitely spoiled....the whole plate smelled like sour milk! We didnt get checked on either...we sat there with the stinky plate on our table for a long time...finally my husband asked someone to come over and remove it. Then our server came back to us finally after about half an hour and said something about being locked in the walk-in...I didnt think that could even happen anymore! We decided to stay because we ordered fish and chips and figured how bad could you mess up (probably frozen) fish and chips? Well, you can leave them in the fryer too long. When they came out the color of the breading was as dark as chocolate and the fries were super greasy. We picked at it but didnt even eat half (at least the fish wasnt spoiled). We only were offered 50% off of our appetizer plate which was mostly uneaten.

During all this we were listening to the couple seated behind us. The woman had ordered one of their "fresh seafood steamer pots" and half way through it found that her a lot of her seafood was still frozen. When she told her server, she only took off 20% and told her she should have said something right away, like it was her fault. I'm sure she would have said something sooner if anyone had asked!!!

All this took about an hour and 40 minutes which is ridiculous for a quick fish and chips dinner when seated immediately. The one bright spot was the side of broccoli..it was definitely fresh not frozen and cooked perfectly. Whoever was on the veggie station is the only competent person there I think!

No...I've been meaning to try Rustica for some time. My favorite pizza in the area is at Villa Ponte in Stockton, NJ (search NJ board for several reviews, plus see review at sliceny.com). Recently visited Nomad Pizza in Hopewell, NJ for the first time...fantastic.

Vino in Northern Liberties - good, brick oven, cheaper than Stella and Osteria. They'll have both the "authentic" as you call it and some offerings with weird toppings (I like the roast pork and broccili rabe).

Derry Church Artisan Chocolates

Hello all, I recently read a review about these high end artisan chocolates from the Mechanicsburg area and having moved to Vermont from that same general area, (central PA.) I couldn't wait to try them. I bought them for my wife of course(ahem...ahem!) WOW! Incredible! Great packaging, great flavor, beautiful, almost a shame to eat. Living in Vermont now, I really loved a specific treat called the Burlington. Honestly folks, this will be my stop for chocolates for now on, and what a beautiful website. Check it out derrychurchartisanchocolates.com
Now, it is on the pricey side, but honestly if compared to other local chocolate companies in the area here in Vermont, its average pricing for a much better product. If only they had a store front in Stowe! oh well! C.

I've been a few times over the years, the first time being around 2000 or so. It's a good date place in the sense that you can have conversation and some laughs over the course of the meal, which you control the pace of. Is it expensive, sure but it can lend itself to a nice evening since the meal can last quite some time and I've never been rushed. They don't try to flip tables quickly.
Is it the best food around, not really but all in all if you have the time to sit there and like to talk then it's fun.
