Bham--real tacos?

Went to Taqueria Mexico on Lorna Rd tonight...had one with chorizo and one with carnitas...usually chorizo is my favorite but here I liked the carnitas better. Not the best I've ever had, but good enough. Apparently on Saturdays and Sundays they have birria tacos, so if I go again I'll be sure to go one of those days so I can try them!

I'll let you know about my next stop...hopefully the taco truck!

Has anyone seen candy corn in any shops this week? It seems like it's something that would definitely have been cleared out by now, as it's usually associated with Halloween. My daughter wants to make a "Blessings Mix" for Thanksgiving and that is one of the ingredients. Thanks!

I agree with the other poster. In addition I will recommend you consider Zesto's (several locations), Rush's (several locations) and the Salty Nut (on green st. near 5 points).

I'm one of the ones that likes Rockaway's. They've had an up and down period especially after the last building burned down. I feel they are in an UP period now and I really like their burgers. The Rockaway burger with pimento cheese is my fav.

I can't speak to the quality of Edna's burgers, but the hot dogs are good.

You've already been offered a few options that are close to your hotel. I just heard that Bogart's is also doing Thanksgiving. They're more of a martini bar as far as I know, but they're on Glenwood Avenue, just round the corner.

I also heard that Tir Na N'Og Irish Pub in Moore Square are doing a Thanksgiving Menu from 1PM-9PM. That might be a fun option - if you can get the hotel to drop you off. (It's not *that* far.)

Are you looking for specific areas in the RDU area? Franklin St might be kind of hard unless you look in the Carrboro area (though there are 2 taco trucks there already). Some of the areas off 15-501 like where WalMart or on the other side where Kohls is may be good. Downtown Durham could use some more pedestrian friendly food (besides OnlyBurger and some taco carts). Thats a tough one.

Birmingham: Banh Mi mania

I happened to be sans kids today, and after doing a little Christmas shopping at Target, I finally stopped by the Saigon Noodle House. I have to say I was quite impressed. The woman working up front was very helpful, offering suggestions, explaining ingredients, asking how hot I liked things....So that kind of good service already gets one of my thumbs up, and after trying the food, my other thumb was definitely in agreement.
I ordered the tofu spring rolls -- very fresh and tasty, served with a yummy dipping sauce on the side.
The bahn mi pate thit nguoi -- the bread was crusty and the meats were rich and delicious. My only wish is that they were dressed a little heavier with butter and had more veggies, then it would have been perfection.
Bun Nem Nuong -- this was my favorite, noodles mixed with porky patty and chopped peanuts, served with a side of shredded lettuce and cilantro to mix in, and a little cup of vinegar/carrot dressing to top everything off. I really liked how the different flavors played with each other. Very satisfying.
All in all, this was quite worth the visit, and I'll definitely be back. Can't wait to try the Pho and one of the bubble smoothies.

Italian bakeries in Birmingham?

You sent me scrambling to Google to find out what savoiardi are! That is going to be tough to find. As a life-long Birmingham resident (in my mid 40s), I am not aware of any Italian bakeries. There used to be a large Italian-American population in the Ensley neighborhood, but that was decades ago and any bakeries that were there are long gone. Your best bets may be:

1. Continental Bakery--The web site does not list them, but perhaps they make them from time to time or on request. http://www.chezlulu.us/bakerybreakfast.php

2. Bottega--If they don't make them, I would think that owner Frank Stitt or some of his folks could tell you where to look. http://www.bottegarestaurant.com/

3. GianMarco's--I am pretty sure that they don't make them, but the host there, Giovanni Respinto, is originally from Genoa, and he may be able to point you in the right direction. His sons, Giani and Marco, are the chefs/owners. If you happen to be in there, you might ask Mr. Respinto about it. I would not call, as he can be a little gruff on the phone. http://www.birminghamrestaurants.com/guide.asp?rid=142197

I hope that helps.

Brasstown is a restaurant that I would never consider eating at in Asheville, but a place that I'm damn glad exists when I'm in the N. Georgia mountains. Honestly, we were quite surprised and pleased by the quality of the place the few times I've been there. But then, my expectations were low based on the other restaurants in the area. I've never ordred off the menu, we always go when there's a buffet.

Also Isaac's - a pub owned by the same people who own the famous Cobblestone Cafe down by River Street. Highly recommend anything with crab in it (hello, Patrick the very nice bartender!), also 700 Drayton - a magnificent mansion, wonderful service and food, we had a very memorable dinner there.

Where to eat in Montgomery Alabama?

The fancy restaurant at the Renaissance is called "The House" and although the food there is passable, coming to a chain hotel restaurant to get a taste of local flavors isn't recommended. There are plenty of other high-end restaurants that offer better renditions of similar fare, with more of a local flare and local ownership- such as Garrett's, La Jolla, City Grill, Nobles, Chop House at Vintage Year, just to name a handfull. The chain oyster place you visited is called Wintzell's, and after the multiple chances I've given them, I can say they serve up by far the most abysmal seafood in Montgomery, and possibly the world. Aw Shucks, Young Barn, Capitol City Oyster, or heck even Jubilee would have been better locally owned options. The BBQ place, Dreamland, is also a chain. I would rank it at the absolute bottom of the list of the different locations of Dreamland I have been to, and is also one of the worst in Montgomery out of all of the available places. The best I've had would be ribs or butt from Smokin' S BBQ in Wetumpka, Varsity BBQ for something in Montgomery, or for the real local stuff the Alabama White BBQ sauce at Love Shack, or the Black BBQ sauce at Chris's in Prattville. Please come back, and the next time you are in town check out what Montgomery has to offer! It doesn't sound like you had a very chowhound experience in Montgomery with all of those chains, but I'm here to say it's possible!

With regard to Memphis, I concur with others that Itta Bena is not where you want to go for good food. Service is untrained, food isn't great. The atmosphere is excellent esp. if Susan Marshall is playing. Unfortunately that is not enough for us to spend money on food there. I would recommend: for BBQ, head to Central BBQ in midtown; great lunch at the Brushmark at the Brooks Museum in Overton Park, dinners downtown at Circa or Flight, dinner in midtown at Restaurant Iris (also check out a play at Playhouse on the Square just across the street - right now they are doing Santaland Diaries - a hoot!), or Bari in midtown which is also by the theatre. In Cooper Young area of midtown, check out Tsunami.

I'm a little confused by your post...are you looking for suggestions anywhere along the way, or just in Archdale? If its the latter, I'm afraid the pickings will be slim in Archdale. The suggestion for Lexington BBQ is a good one, depending on the day of the week and time of day. As an option, High Point is fairly close to Archdale, perhaps you could drive into there and find something. If you're staying in a hotel, you may want to consider pushing on to Greensboro (about 30 minutes from Archdale) and stay there. Lots of good eats in G'boro.

Could anyone recommend a restaurant open on Thanksgiving for a traditional holiday meal? I've already heard about the Old Pink House, but is there anything else that would be worth a try? Thanks!

Just have to say that my husband and I went there with our two kids last night. We also has a coupon from Restaurant.com and were told up front that the restaurant was no longer honoring and they'd been taken off the website. Checked website this afternoon - they're still listed. She told us in this economy that it was hard enough to get a business going without people getting $25 worth of food for $5!??! Unlike the other posts, the woman at the front was very unpleasant to us. We should have left after the whole coupon controversy, but we were already there - kids were tired and cranky. The food was just so-so at best. The hot trays had left some of the dishes dried out and not very appetizing. There were several stranges signs posted - don't touch the glass case, leave your tray on your table, and the whole cost of plumbing sign noted above. It was way overpriced for the food and the atmosphere, not to mention the service.

Hmm wish I could change the thread title, as they are doing fine!

And Bonnie made me the most fabulous birthday cake, my fave French classic: Gateau St. Honore.....it is a pastry ring with creme patisserie then topped with little cream puffs, stuffed with creme patisserie. This was genius Gateau St. Honore.
I'm definitely ordering something for the holidays from her. She is a great baker, using first class ingrediants, even the strawberry was ripe and delicious.

Lordy, you certainly made the effort. No doubt. Maybe the place ain't what it used to be, but it was amazing not so long ago.

You're a true chowhound, though, to travel so far and stay for the chance to try it. I wish you'd had a better time. But I'll say it again, these Chinese restaurant chefs enter and exit at a frightening pace, it's just amazing. I don't know what to think of it.

Zayka Indian restaurant in Brierdale shopping center near Brier Creek, Raleigh

Thank you for your suggestion,
I went here with my 6 year old and she enjoyed the Tandoori chicken so much that I had to get a take out for the evening. They DO NOT Charge for kids 6 and under for the buffet.

I was personaly greeted by the owner and treated very well. I feel this place is one of the best in the area. and they made the naan tailored to my taste. (I asked them to put some hot peppers in there and they did that even during a full house buffet). and did not charge extra for it. These guys mean some serious business. I am sure the other restaurants in the area are in trouble

Memphis, TN: Tom's Bar-B-Q & Deli?

Tom's Barbeque which has been featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, recently opened a second location in Oakland, CA. I have no clue why. However, it seems like they are trying to stick pretty close to the food served at the Memphis location.

So, I was just wondering if Chowhounds who have been to the Memphis location have tips on the best things to order ... or things to avoid.

I know there are other good bbq joints in Memphis, but because we only have Tom's out here, that is all I'm interested in.

Also, I read somewhere that there is some Greek influence in the rub Adam uses. Is that true?

Country buffet in Durham - Pan Pan

I ate lunch there today and was impressed, although my expectations were low for two reasons: (1) it's in Northgate Mall, not where you would expect a country/soul food restaurant to be, and (2) the name sounds like it should be a cheap Chinese buffet.

The price was right ($7.99 for lunch, all you can eat) and I really it that they serve you, which lets them keep the food fresh, keeps you from having to wander around lost with a plate, and it keeps careless patrons from making a mess of the food. You just go down the line like at a cafeteria except you pay just one price and the sweet lady behind the steam table fixes your plate for you (being careful to put items like greens and beans in their own bowls).

They have a nice little salad bar, with homemade mustardy potato salad and coleslaw being the standouts. Two soups, today being vegetable-beef and gumbo (didn't try those). Meats included excellent fried chicken, baked chicken, pretty good pork barbeque, barbequed country ribs, fried fish, perfect meat loaf ,and probably other items I'm forgetting. There were many vegetables -- macaroni and cheese, mashed potatoes with either beef or chicken gravy, dressing, collards, pinto beans, cabbage, corn, green beans, and amazing sweet potatoes (fresh, with a glaze that had hints of coconut and orange). Breads were rolls, corn bread, and good hush puppies. Desserts were included - peach or apple cobbler or pumpkin pie.

The people are very nice, the iced tea is just fine, and the server brought to-go teas as we left without our even asking. They have outside entrance, so you can park near the door and not enter the mall if you don't want to (it's right off I-85 for anybody traveling through Durham). The dinner and Sunday buffet goes up to $11.99, but they add items such as carved turkey, ribeye steak, and more seafood choices (according to the sign out front, anyway). I checked their inspection scores online and they've been running in the mid-90s.

I haven't found many good country restaurants in the area. In terms of variety and value, it's hard to beat Pan Pan. It's certainly not special occasion place, but if you were raised in the South and crave fried chicken and greens and a sweet tea, I think it's a winner. If it were in some rustic old building in the middle of nowhere, I suspect it would be packed all the time.
